Living in your car is ********. That's a personal choice she made. She doesn't want to live outside of the city. Commuting to work > living in my car and saying I stay in SF.

Commute would be over 2 hours everyday if they moved somewhere that's affordable. If you live in San Jose which is cheaper, you can make it to SF in a little over an hour, if you leave at 5:30 or so. A lot of these companies start their day at 8 ish or so, so if you leave at 6:30 or 7 you're looking at at least an h0ur and a half commute if there's no accidents on 280. I wouldn't even consider 101 since there's so much traffic on it.

So relocate or get up earlier. People commute into NYC from Connecticut, all parts of Jersey and the furthest parts of LI everyday. They get up earlier because they have to. I'd rather have a roof over my head than swallowing my pride and living on the street.

I'm sayin'. For the most part, BART is reliable. Yeah, during commute hours, you have to deal with crowded cars, but if I have to make a choice between that or living in a damn van with IKEA bins, I'm taking the roof.

There are a lot more spots closer than San Jose that are much more affordable - especially if you're single and just coming up.

People want the lifestyle though. All these young kids want to make tons of money so they can spend it on eating, drinking, partying, etc. It;s like that live in the present mentality.

All this talk about owning got me looking really hard to get a spot now. Decided to look in Emeryville and found some nice condos in the $500k range which is crazy price considering but still doable. Went to about 5 open houses and everything has it's pros and cons. Of course the one that is $630k is the nicest but just out of my price range for a condo. I guess back to the drawing board.

I'm 32 and in the IT industry since finishing school - so 10 yrs experience. I'm at the Senior/advisory developer level. At the technical core level with my level of experience, it's around 120k/year. The immediate managers get 150k/ year. After taxes and that rent, they have thr same disposable money as everyone else. Now, if your stocks boom or got bought out, that's a different story - you're set for retirement.

Damn... you dudes are ballin. :x

I turned down a job opportunity in SF because it was "only" paying 120k. Had an opportunity to work as a contractor instead and the salary would've been 160k. Still turned it down. I wouldn't be able to live comfortably off that. Not trying to pay $3500+ a month on rent :smh:

Geez. I don't even think I can ever break 100k in my line of work. I wish I knew the tech field was where its at. Thank god for my $1000 small studio....I guess.

Dudes in here saying they can't live off of $7500/mo after rent are some fools  If you live within your means you'd be good.

Yeah their engineers do well... The 3 people I know at Google are all in the 80-90k range.

Yeah you have a few years on me. The engineers I know for my age are all in that 120k range. The thing with Google and Facebook is they can pay you whatever they want since anyone would work there. You put Google or Facebook on your resume and it's game over. Facebook offered me 34 an hour and I

Idk what you do to spend 160k a year lawlz.

 But if I would've taken the offer, I more than likely would've taken the 120k a yr salary. Reason... it was a permanent position. I didn't want to move from LA to SF for a contractor position, even if it paid 40k more. So at 120k yr, I wouldn't be able to live comfortably in SF. Especially paying $3500+ a month for rent. I'm not too far from 120k here in LA, and pay much less in rent.

Did anyone catch Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown? The latest episode features San Francisco. He talks a lot about the way SF has changed due to the tech boom. He also trains at Ralph Gracie, eats (obviously) and throws shade at neckbeards, man buns, and vapes. Should be OnDemand now but here's some clips from it:

I'm here in SM and wouldn't choose anywhere else to live.

I make basically the same down here from when I was living in SF and pay 500 less in rent with an extra bedroom... And 20 blocks from the beach lol. Plus revenue sharing!

$3,500 is hardly the medium for rent here, unless you just have high standards. You can get a studio for around $2k in a decent area if you are either willing to live a tad further away or in the semi ghetto area. Not a great selling point since you probably live in a nice area in LA but it's still doable to rent cheaper out here.

I need to watch this when I get back from work.

Why do people think you need to make 6 figures + to live comfortably out here? Living in an apartment with a view of AT&T park is not "living comfortably", it's living extravagantly  You can even make 40K and still live in SF/Bay Area if you budget and make sacrifices to your lifestyle (like not buying clothes unless you need them, eating out less, not going to clubs all the time, etc.), which is exactly what I and thousands of other college grads did after getting our first jobs.

Right now I'm paying $1200 for a a room in a 2 bedroom spot near UCSF with plenty of street parking and right near the Muni line, which is pretty much in line with apartment prices in the main cities of the Bay Area/ LA. It's in a nice neighborhood with plenty of restaurants and some cool sports bars nearby. There's plenty of similarly priced spots around here, but sounds like people HAVE to live in an expensive spot in SOMA, otherwise they feel like they're missing out on life :rolleyes

That being said, just because people with my educational background and current job can afford to live here doesn't mean that there doesn't have to be some protection for someone making 40K but has to support a family as well. It's easy to say "If you can't afford it, just move" for single/younger people like us, but it's completely different for people who have been here for years and have significant ties to the area.

I got lucky.... My rent in SF is $1900, but owner is raising it $2100 by end of dec. I pay $350 plus utilities. It's a 3br/2bath, kitchen all that. Newly renovated. There's also a downstair unit, $1200

I like what Berlin is doing:

"Berlin has become the first city in Germany in which rent-control legislation has come into force in a bid to put the brakes on some of the fastest rising rents in Europe.

From Monday, landlords in the capital will be barred from increasing rents by more than 10% above the local average. Such controls were already in place for existing tenants but have now been extended to new contracts."

Will watch later.

The same thing happen to Seattle :smh: .

Million dollar listings in my neighborhood now :wow:

This. Yeah man Its crazy out here in Seattle aswell. :smh:Tons of people that went to school with us who lived in Seattle all have been pushed South down to Renton, Kent, Federal Way etc.

With Amazon expanding and lots of big tech companies building offices out here now it is only going to continue to get worse.
