A drama based on the experiences of Agu, a child soldier fighting in the civil war of an unnamed African country.
Powerful movie, incredible acting by Abraham Attah as Agu

thoughts?

Just left, Ill post my detailed feelings when I get home. Sad thing most people will miss the significance of a few scenes such as the one with the business men sitting with idris.

This is on dual release with Netflix I believe.

Edit: you guys prob figured that out due to the huge *** "Netflix" on the movie poster.

they released it in theaters so it could be eligible for awards season
can't wait to watch

I just hate these awards shows are going to treat this as some raw film on "savage Africa" and nobody will be talking about these wars being created by Western Governments to destabilize these nations and suck out the resources. The Director dropped so many little gems in this film that sadly nobody will even notice.

its a limited release tho, only independant theaters

big 4 movie chains blackballed it because of some 90-day theater exclusivity bs

i think its cuz its a str8 african movie with no white people in it

nah its blackballed because Theaters are afraid of Netflix taking over their game like they are hurting the Cable industry. This movie is not some militant film.

It's because theaters are afraid/angry that Netflix is releasing big time movies like this.

Great movie and incredible performances by Elba and Abraham Attah. I said it in the movie thread, but go into it with a clear mind, focused on the movie, and you'll be rewarded with a moving, emotional, scary, depressing, and even at times hopeful story of a child soldier. My favorite part is how it sticks with Abu and doesn't try to make it about some outsider who comes in and experiences all these things and is changed or tries to help or anything like that... no.. it takes a normal kid, living a regular life, and throws him into the world of a soldier and takes us through his emotional journey.

I was kind of stunned after I finished watching it, I just had to take a minute and take it all in. Well worth the watch.

Man I went into this movie thinking it was going to be some watered down B.S. straight to Netflix B-movie. Props to the director for keeping it somewhat raw and yes "savage". If I directed and produced this movie tho, it would've been NC-17 and never seen he light of day, but they struck a healthy medium.

You should check out Johnny Mad Dogg Also, many of the actors were former rebel soldiers.

An old white guy walked out during the scene when they found the lady and her daughter in the room and was yelling out "this is horrible horrible horrible". The thing is people aren't saying its horrible when they are buying gold and other things that come from these nations as the whole point of these wars are to destabilize the nations to take resources.

Putting what I thought about it in a spoiler in case anyone wants to watch it unbiased.

3/5. Good but not great. Would not pay $10 to see it in the theatre but not bad for a NetFlix 'kill some time' movie.

Going to watch this at some point later in the week.

Netflix REALLY changing the game up.

:pimp:

Yes, and I love it. Netflix really threw a monkey wrench into the monotony that television and movies have been for years.

Will watch this when I get home today.

Relax, there's more to a movie than the issue it exposes, how matters as well. You can cook the finest filet mignon, but if you present it on a dirty plate people will balk. Not at all saying this is the case here, but it's unfair to try and guilt people over something like that. Plus if you have Netflix, you have already paid to see it. Haven't seen it yet, but will later this week.
