The complex dynamic of putting together a professional sports roster is very different than knowing who is a better basketball player.

If a NBA player thinks player 1 is better than player 2 because of the numerous times he has matched up with both players and has personal experience on which player is tougher to guard, how is someone who has never stepped foot on an NBA court before tell him that he's wrong?

Completely agree. But my point is, even during the year he was clearly the best player in the game, Shaq didn't get described that way because that label just doesn't get given to big men. At least, that's been my observation.
 
Peer evaluations are extremely important but it's hard to know exactly what other players thought of Lebron, Duncan, Kobe, Dirk, Nash, KG etc etc without player awards.

And even then there would still be politics involved, y'all would've went crazy if Chris Paul got voted NBA MVP over a Kobe or Lebron. :lol:

It's funny because when players talk about b Roy was the hardest player to guard people saw the information as an interesting insight.

Same things said about a player they hate and all the nonsense excuses come out on how player opinions are not important.

Same dudes who would be posting I told you so if a player says Duncan is better than Kobe

Most people can't handle new information objectively, always gotta get emotional

The only thing silly was that analogy considering nobody's mom knows **** about NT.

Nobody said NT's opinion don't matter at all. The point was...there is something to be said for a professional athlete who's held in high regard by other professional athletes. The same dudes we sit in here and talk about all day idolize this guy and aren't thinking about analytics, silly top 5 lists, and **** like that.

There are people who sincerely believe that Floyd Mayweather doesn't belong anywhere among boxings greatest, but everyone who laces those gloves up know better, even if they don't like him. There's no right or wrong here, but if you were Floyd Mayweather...what means more to you?

The ability to play a sport will =/= the ability to understand and explicate the mechanics behind the sport.

It's the same reason why the best players don't make the best coaches, the same reason that Hakeem isn't the best player development coach.




I'll give you an example, ask Steph Curry or other great shooters what makes a great 3 point shooters, they will say go "straight up straight down," feet square to the basket"

Steph doesn't square/sholders his feet to the basket, and he doesn't go straight up straight, basically ZERO great shooters do. THeir body is usually at a 45 degree angle, and they DON'T go straight up adn down they actually jump sweep ther feet forward, sway there shoulders back and turn as they shoot.




Steph Curry the greatest shooter in the world doesn't even know how his OWN jumpshot works, but somehow I'm supposed to assume his opinion is superior to my own? Nah.

I'm not saying there experience is worthless but it isn't an automatic trump card.

But Curry has merit and accolades and xyz to warrant it. He would hold more water though. No ones going to ask DeAndre to coach Randles FT shooting.

Through out the years and even now, many commentators have commentated through observation. Numerous commentary about Shaqs FT shooting, etc etc have come across..
 
And Duncan gets plenty of respect amongst his peers. Y'all hear Shaq and Chuck talk about him? They gush about him. I don't know what we're really arguing here. Freeze and some others thinks Duncan has never reached the heights Kobe has b/c he wasn't as popular or considered the best player during his time by his peers. In my opinion, Duncan was/is. He's just not as popular.

At the end of the day, both are legends. 2 of the best players post Jordan.

Still, Duncan > Kobe

You're reaching with your one off comparisons.

It's really not that serious. Bottom line: Kobe Bryant is held in high regard universally, professional athletes included. When discussing someone's impact and legacy, that **** goes way deeper than analytics and all that other nerd **** that's hot these days.

You have NBA superstar coming out and saying "this man is a legend, we grew up on him and he meant a lot to the game". There's something to be said for that. It's really that simple. You in here talking about 45 degree angles and ****.

Fair point, but I think the word you were looking for was "denigrate," not "degenerate."

Ironically, Kobe has, by his own admission, degenerated

(degenerate - having lost the physical, mental, or moral qualities considered normal and desirable; showing evidence of decline).
