Hassan becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. He's going to demand the max. Miami's front office is not willing to give him the max, so he's most likely going to sign for another team who is. Now you may ask, why won't Miami offer him the max? Because his stats don't tell the whole story. Hassan Whiteside is talented, but he's also a self-centered idiot. His stats are often inflated at the expense of team chemistry and efficiency. He tends to get himself in foul trouble, also hurting the team's strategy.
Dwight on the other hand can be signed at a bargain. If he can be even 3/4 of the guy he was before his decline, then that's a good get.

It's all the behind the scenes ****, no? Whiteside is difficult to deal with and they don't have his Bird rights, so it's looking like they'll lose him for nothing if he's there after today. All the whispers say dude comes with a lot of baggage. My guess is we find out even more dirt once they're through with him. Probably some other stories that are ready to leak when the time is right.
Miami might have the 2nd best organizational structure in the league (behind the Spurs) with Pat, Spo, Zo, and all those veterans. And at times they still can't get through to him. That's concerning, especially when he's on his way to getting a long term commitment for big money.
Talent is all there, yet dude might finesse some team this summer.

It's not even that behind the scenes anymore. Dude is pretty vocal about not getting enough PT, even though the team performs better when he comes off the bench. Dragic's inability to live up to his contract this season is due in large part to Hassan Whiteside. His spats with Spo have been made public at this point as well. I can see how from the outside looking in, moving Hassan looks questionable, but here in Miami a large portion of the fanbase is fed up with him.

So a guy in only his FOURTH season has wholes in his game? Please name a player whose game was perfect by his fourth season.
Yea he still has room to grow, but so does every fourth year player. It's silly to get rid of a young, talented 7-footer just because he's flawed. He could be a much different player 2 years from now.

Maybe next, or the year after. It's his first year where's he had lofty expectations. Cutting the cord so early is ridiculous. Exchanging him for a guy on the wrong side of 30 is even more ridiculous.

Listen man, if we had him under contract for another year we probably wouldn't be trading him. But the fact of the matter is that we don't so we're trying to get some value out of him. We don't think he's worth the max for all the reasons I already listed, and the FO knows that with the scarcity of big men in the league, some other team is going to offer him a lot of money. That's why we're trading him, is it really that hard for you guys to understand? I hope your team signs him for the max this offseason, because I'm sure I'll see you in here next year making the same complaints about him that most of Heat nation is making now.

I think that's part of it. the fringe contenders know there aren't really big moves out there that can put them on GSW or San Antonio's level, so they're not going to trade just to trade. I think it also has to do with the salary cap going up. Teams don't have to worry as much about dumping bad contracts as they did in past years because they're going to have extra cap space anyway.
