yeah that's plausible. just like how his shooting coach or whatever clippers are doing to help DJ aren't the best methods and how he can probably improve with another method.

*Shrugs* It is what it is.

Let's hope he hits enough Free Throws to steal a W on the road tonight.

He's at 52% in his last month (60 attempts). But who knows if that's gonna last or not laugh.gif

I was looking at the worst Ft shooters and I was shocked Draymond was so low. Now that's a confusing one. The bruce bowen types that can hit 3's but are poor ft shooters. Iggly, too.

So if everyone worked as hard as they could at free throws, you agree that they would all shoot them as good as steph curry? Because there are no limitations right?

There are absolutely physical limitations. Hand size, for example. The bigger someone's hand is in relation to the ball, the harder it is to shoot. Like a normal-sized person shooting a FT with a softball. Its harder than with a regulation basketball. Yes, plenty of players overcome it, but it is a physical factor that makes it more difficult for some people.

I guess it's personal preference but shooting in one motion > shooting in 2

I don't think some of you understand what the concept of touch is and definitely don't understand that people have caps on what they can and can't do.

Like Dwight Howard could change his name to Olajuwon and live under his wing for a year and he wouldn't be able to do anything Hakeem could. And casual fans write this off as laziness
post #44832 of 93193
There is absolutely NO REASON for it to be acceptable for an NBA player to be a poor free throw shooter. If you're playing at the highest level of competition for basketball in the world, there's a lot that is expected of you.

I just can't give DeAndre Jordan a pass for missing free throws and then rewarding him for his inefficiencies, but implementing a rule that debilitates opposing teams to exploit his weakness.

What happened to having a competitive edge and adjusting against your opponent? That's like saying you can't even run a fast break, because 1 guy is significantly slower than everyone and can't keep up.

For all the people and coaches complaining about this "issue", they seem to be coming from teams that have very poor free throw shooters laugh.gif

Greatest basketball players walking earth.

Can't consistently make a shot standing still with no one around them.

Seems legit.

Truth.

No, it's not. At all. Fast breaks don't make the game incredibly tedious to watch.

The Celtics don't have anybody who's bad enough to hack. I just think it's bad for the game.

(sigh)

Alright, I let it go with my man Fris, but i'm legit done with it after this :lol

No one is saying that it "should" be acceptable. But, it is what it is. He can't shoot free throws. He works very hard at it, and has had multiple all world trainers to aid in him bettering his free throw shooting.

So the point is, is that maybe free throw shooting isn't as easy as you think. It is a skill that most have, but some don't. Like, jumping, ball handling, etc. not everyone can be a good free throw shooter no matter how hard one works. A few tweaks here and there may make him marginally better, but that's it.

This isn't about giving him a pass, this is about the skill of free throw shooting, and how not everyone has it. There's a cap on someone's ability to garner certain skills, free throws included.

Is shooting an NBA free throw really as simple as consistently making a shot standing still with no one around them?

is it really that simple to everyone?

I would say maybe they should start aiming for the box but that's probably even harder for someone with no touch whatsoever

You came to the conclusion that DJ is a mental midget because he's a bad free throw shooter? I mean I guess...

My line of conversation today isn't really about the "rule" needing to be changed. I don't care about that. You'll hurt yourself in the long run (see pop) if you have to rely on that rule to beat a team 4 out of 7. I do think that it's becoming more widespread and the league may need to eventually step in, but I'm indifferent on whether the rule should be changed or not.

My point has more to do with the cause of his bad free throw shooting, and how complex of an issue it is to fix for some players.

When it comes to one of the easiest ones I would hope that the guy who gets paid millions of dollars can do it.

Millions of dollars literally has nothing to do with it.

Like, not even a tiny bit :lol

Not all skills can be acquired by everyone. If you can't shoot free throws, no amount of money is going to change that outcome.

Also "One of the easiest ones" is a fallacy. All skills are not created equal. Just because a free throw is easy for one person, doesn't mean it's easy for the next.

i agree 100% that its a hard issue to fix and not everyone can be a great or even good ft shooter

but that's part of the game just like how a guy like roy hibbert is never going to be able to hit someone with the shammgod

if someone is bad at something, the other team has every right to exploit that weakness and take advantage

whether its an effective strategy is up for debate

free throws are about consistency. develop a routine. practice the routine enough to become automatic. a free throw should literally be you catching your breath, relaxing, hit the routine. if u miss fine, but at least split. you have practically no responsibilities outside of basketball. take a couple hours a day to practice it.

on this subject, what is everyones routine to shoot a FT? mine is to bounce it off to my right side. catch it with two hands like im picking the ball up off a rack and then shoot. as long as i "pick the ball up off a rack" im nailin that free throw most of the time.

devils advocate:

hibbert cant shamgod YET becuz it requires basic handles and footwork

hibbert isn't coordinated

he would first have to get the footwork down

after that the shamgod would become pretty simple to him, even if it would look ugly, he would be able to do it.

That mess was wide right. It doesn't matter where he released it from.
