Mask coming for Beal
But those delayed concussion symptoms - based on what he said - would sort of make me wary.
Beal has one more concussion protocol test remaining but said he isn’t experiencing any symptoms and the expectation is he will play. Whenever he does return, Beal, who missed Tuesday’s loss to the Toronto Raptors, will wear a mask to protect his broken nose, which he said will require four to six weeks to heal.
The 22-year-old sharpshooter said he began experiencing concussion-like symptoms once he reached the locker room after receiving a forearm to the face in the second quarter Tuesday from Celtics guard Marcus Smart, which Beal insisted he did not believe was intentional. He said the symptoms lasted “a day to a day and a half.”
“When I got to the back, all of a sudden I got a little dizzy,” said Beal, who participated in Washington’s shootaround Thursday morning. “Then I just kept having blank stares and I was out of it a little bit. And they diagnosed me with a concussion.”
Beal, who played football growing up, said he had never suffered a concussion or a broken nose before, but maintained that he will not shy away from contact. He did acknowledge that playing with a mask could become a nuisance.
“I can’t touch my nose, I can’t sneeze, I can’t pick my nose,” Beal said. “So it’s really leave it alone for four to six weeks until it heals back completely. So I’m just going to continue to wear the mask and make sure I’m cautious around these dudes and, as much as I can, protect it. It is a little hard to breathe. I still have a little blood and everything clogged up in my nose but I still have another way to breathe.”
I've had two concussions, one of which I don't remember because I was unconscious and had no short-term memory to retell what happened when I woke up. I had been out for about two minutes, and the next few hours I was throwing up continuously. 4x and I'm not joking. There's degrees of severity to each individual concussion, based on how much force/speed a person is moving at the exact moment the contact's made to his head from whatever causes it, (for me it was the back of my head on an ice patch while snowboarding in a mogul park).
And the worst part is it's not a science. We can get as close as saying it's the force/speed and what's making contact with the head of the person who sustained the concussion, but some people just have a headache, some people have a mild concussion and some have a concussion that has effects that leak into the next few days, weeks. It's neurological pathways and relative blunt-force trauma the skull passes along to the brain. We're not at a point where we can diagnose the severity and have it override someone's opinion that they're okay ... "ready to go".
Good luck to Beal, the one-man Wall Wizards have been depressing, and others have been out like Nene, Pierce gone, Otto proven to be the Otto we thought he was, etc. That being said, I've heard Wall talk more about Reggie Jackson's paycheck this year than Wall doing anything significant or of note.
