Stephen Curry Named Western Conference Player of the Week

Reigning MVP Averaged 43.8 Points During 4-0 Week to Earn Fourth Weekly Award this Season
Posted: Feb 29, 2016

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, February 22, through Sunday, February 28, the NBA announced today. The award is the fourth such honor for Curry this season, making him the first player in Warriors history to win the award four times in a single season and giving him a franchise-record six career weekly accolades.

Curry led the Warriors to a 4-0 week by averaging 43.8 points, 7.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.50 steals in 35.8 minutes and hitting 60.8 percent from the field and 61.1 percent from three-point range (33-of-54). During the week, Curry tied the single-game NBA record for three-point field goals with 12 on Feb. 27 at Oklahoma City—equaling the record on a game-winner with 0.6 seconds remaining in overtime—and broke his own single-season three-point record (currently at 288 threes) in addition to setting a new NBA-mark for consecutive regular-season games with a three-pointer, which now stands at 129-straight games. Curry became the first player in NBA history to hit double-digit threes in back-to-back games (Feb. 25-27) and now has five such games in his career (three this season), more than any player in league annals.

The reigning MVP scored at least 30 points in all four games during the week, matching a career-best streak, while becoming the first Warrior since Rick Barry in 1967 to score at least 40 points in three-straight contests (Feb. 24-27), including his third 50-point effort of the season (fifth career) with 51 points on Feb. 25 at Orlando. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Curry’s 43.8 points are the most by any player in the NBA over a four-game stretch since Kobe Bryant in March 2007, and the most by any player over the course of four-straight games on the road since Michael Jordan in Nov. 1992. Curry is the first player to average at least 43 points on better than 60 percent shooting over a four-game period since Jordan did so from March 26 – April 1, 1990.

With the 4-0 week, Golden State closed out a seven-game road stretch with a 6-1 mark for the second time this season, improving to 53-5 (.914) on the campaign, the best mark through 58 games in NBA history. The Warriors earned their franchise-record 29th road win on Feb. 27 at Oklahoma City, eclipsing the previous mark of 28 set last season. Golden State clinched a playoff berth on Feb. 27, becoming the first team to clinch a spot in the postseason in February since the 1987-88 Lakers.

The award marks the 41st time a Warriors player has been named Player of the Week since the NBA began giving out the award in 1979, including the fifth time this season (Draymond Green earned the other accolade for Golden State). Toronto’s Kyle Lowry was named Player of the Week in the Eastern Conference.

Do we change the rules?

should the line be moved back?

Should we bring back hand checking??

Don't change anything. Hold every player accountable on defense. It'll make them better in the end.

... even though I wouldn't mind seeing hand checking again. nerd.gif lol

Hand checking isn't defense. It should never come back.

I doubt Doc would sign off on that.

Does he really have a choice soon?

Cp3 is on the wrong side of 30. Why not trade him for a younger star pg?

Still waiting for a valid answer to how in tf curry is doing this. Just saying "he is just good", "he practices", etc ain't gone cut it. Bro doing something that no other man has known before you can best bet that!

Ain't no way in hell bro is consistently coming down on the break against grown pro NBA players n pulling these lot ball threes, most with no follow through while turning his body mid stroke like "yup, that's cash!" Looking like he shooting at Dave n busters.

Before folks piggy back Phil, no ole boy Chris Jackson or whatever his name from the nuggets was not on this same level of shooting.

The ultimate rule change that would make Curry human?

Just get rid of the 3 point line

You do that and he's just another nba player devil.gif

Big O was right, only chance you have vs Steph right now is to pick him up full court. It can't be one of your best offensive players tho, gotta be a Tony Allen type of player.

And the league is making Tony Allen types disappear by the year.

im starting to come around to this.

THIS ISN'T ABOUT STEPH.

i've been saying for a long time in the college basketball thread and the NBA draft thread that the NBA is becoming a league where "if you can't shoot you can't play" and Ben simmons will have a tough transition...

is that league we want, where Ben SImmons can't play, because he can't shoot?

Hmm, I haven't really thought about the three point line back. I'd probably prefer it to stay as is.

But it's an interesting dilemma.

It's not really an explainable thing. What do you want to hear? He knows some absurd secret to shooting the ball that no one else knows? A combination of hard work, natural talent, and luck/randomness. He's a special player doing something we haven't seen before, just enjoy it.

Domatas Sabonis is an incredibly rebounder, really good post player, fun to watch....but he can't shoot 3's so probably can't play.

If Aaron Gordon never learns to shoot, he can't be a stsr player.

Is that what we want out of baskatball a league where its better to play Demare Carrol instead of Aaron Gordon?

Please don't move the 3pt line back.

I'm in favor of a wider court tho, especially at the college level

NY Knicks | NY Jets | NY Yankees

Hand checking ain't dead for the record. Just keep your eyes open

What they need to do is not allow Steph to shoot 3s in the last 2 minutes of the quarter. That way guys don't have to worry about trying to stop him, the rules will take care of that for them.
thing is...tony allen types...its incredible hard to find a plockdown defender that can also score for you. i mean we have kawhi, but steph gave him 30 during commercial break. So then if you do end up with a tony allen, you end up with the same issue that memphis and boston had, having to play 4 on 5 on offense, and letting the player tony is guarding not have to guard him so they can bring the double every possession. There are few good two way players in the L. and then 94 feet or hell, even 47 ft of lockdown defense is difficult af for even the most conditioned. dudes will burnout. plus, all good defender bite on crossovers and pumpfakes. its part of defense. you have to believe that the player is going to go when they look like they're going. if you gamble and assume they're just crossing you and you stay put, and they actually do go that way, you've just been beaten and are out of position. just look at the MJ/AI thing. everybody knows mike was a monster defender. He had no choice but to bite on those crosses. It's up to the offensive player to sell them.
