5th Grade Teacher Dresses in Blackface for Halloween

How about you actually learn about dude and see if he really is racist instead of throwing out those percentages on an assumption.

not everything is what you perceive. I'm just saying let's learn more about the situation before crying racism so quickly.

yea but you're like tiger woods though. you probably only claim black when it's convenient, like when you want to say the n-word during rap songs.

 and then goes on to say that people are racist against him. I'm Black and proud of it. I'm a mutt myself, but I embrace my Blackness. You choose to be Black when it benefits you as seen by you just having to throw in you were part Asian raised in a Black community as if that's a badge of honor.

And to you. I told you about the Asian side because I'm being honest.

I will tell you this tho. Call me another mutt and disrespect me as a man again and you will be gone. No one has ever called me that and I let the first one slide. You don't know me and I don't know you but you want to make it personal which isn't happening.

if you are white and you go blackface you are racist.

why do I have to research his life to prove this. the fact that his wife didn't check him at the door makes her racist.

when you do something this dumb and ignorant other people shouldn't have to prove your innocence. you're a racist.

It wasn't relevant then. You chose to put that in there to deflect from the issue that Black people are "too sensitive" when we are blantantly mocked and disrespected. You're right, I don't know you; don't care to either, but its mighty convenient of you to just throw that in as you please. Add that to your outright dismissal of people's opinion and that's why I have a problem with you.

This man as a teacher is in a position of power and influence. He knew exactly what he was doing when he darkened his skin. There's no way you grow up in the South and are oblivious to the history of blackface. None.

People need to start asking at least 10 people, "is my costume safe? " because common sense now isn't so damn common.

Who cares. You want to make it personal and keep calling me a mutt. That's where you cross the line.
I have nothing to hide so I certainly don't mind tell you my birth mother is Asian. She has gone out of her way to make sure she's part of my life since I learned about her so she deserves that respect. It doesn't change a thing about me or my upbringing.
No one is dismissing your opinion. If you are hurt your are hurt. I'm cool with that. It doesn't make me lose any sleep. I just don't agree which is my choice. Live with it.

Bruh... I'm not the one pressing my view on everyone. I've mostly been replying to comments towards me. I'm fine with people having a view. I'm not the one throwing low blows and pulling cards like people know me.

If a person is mad, then they are mad. I'm fine with that.
I fully expected to not get nice replies. That's why it did bother me when dudes tried to go low.
We'd all be better served if you would honor that last post of yours and go to bed.

Gif me all you want but when people can't leave well enough alone then I will respond.

Don't reply to me and you won't hear from me.

Try and crack slick and I will reply. It's pretty simple.

FTR I agree w you and appreciate the open mindedness

No disrespect but white people dont get the benefit of the doubt in this country, and deservedly so. Therefore, they should refrain from **** like this becuase even if they don't carry racist thoughts or actions, history is not on their side.

Plus the climate is so intense right now that it's not even worth it. Even though I do think everyone is so damn uptight and PC, but maybe it's needed for change and tolerance.

This post can't be real life. Now ALL white people must act on behalf of racist white people, aka the least common denominator  Let's go ahead and say each race must now act in accordance with their worst case scenario, let's see how well that is received...

Then condemning the PC hypocrisy only to hypocritically call for tolerance.

What in the world

I swear "race card" has to be a phrase created by non blacks (perdominantly white people). It always manages to manifest itself as a deflection when black people have an issue or take offense to something.

how about lets not and lets have white people act on behalf of the history, not of other racist white people

its funny how white peoples "worst case scenario" seems to be "the least common denominator"

"pc hypocrisy" aside, if more white people actually gave a crap about not being offensive this wouldnt happen as often as it does, and might actual help create a more tolerant society

I just don't get during the process of this that white ppl don't realize the colossal mistake they're making.

Are they laughing through it the whole time? It takes longer than a few minutes to do. Do they just think they have to be really dedicated to their costume gimmick? Thrown any common sense out the window :smh:

Also anybody defending this clown  If he's not a racist or a troll offending ppl for attention then he's an extremely ignorant person. It's like white ppl need to be retaught the correct history of this country on a monthly basis to get it.

Sadly they still wouldn't get it and some just do not want to. Too busy dismissing the past as if it holds no weight today on issues regarding POC.

I guess it's easier to run away from the truth, dismiss and display ignorance than to confront it head on. *shrug*

'oh i'm just putting on black face to be funny, like a joke. im playing a part. i'm not racist. but question, while i'm dressed like this, is it coo for me to say *****? just wondering'

On top of everything else, watch this guy turn out to be a history teacher...

Given the associated history, there's no excuse for this.  It's never appropriate.

We literally do have this conversation every single year.  It's a shame that the quote function doesn't seem to work properly for imported posts, which, along with broken images, makes it difficult to read through threads created prior to our migration to Huddler.  At least more people seem to be cognizant of the historical context compared to previous discussions:    http://niketalk.com/t/318403/college-students-protesting-racist-halloween-costumes-vol-cmon-man

BLACKFACE is offensive. Point blank. Doesnt matter if the person did it out of harmless fun. Theres no way around the fact. People know what it represents and what theyre doing when they do it, yet they go out of their way to offend anyway. I'm amazed that people dont see eye to eye on this.

Exactly.  I'm not sure why it's deemed necessary for someone to "mean it" before something hurtful and offensive can be called out as such.

If someone accidentally steps on your foot, it still hurts.  If a drunk driver strikes someone you care about, does it really help that they "didn't mean it?"  Recklessness is a cause, not an excuse.

The phrase "race card" depicts racism as something that people of color leverage to their advantage, as one would a trump card.  As I have limited time to respond tonight, I'll just link to a previous response on that issue:  http://niketalk.com/t/616324/why-is...aacp-colorado-office-bombed/330#post_22409424

why cant we just shut up and not say anything at all?

lets let these white people have their fun

That's one of the more insidious aspects of White privilege:  the assumption that the status quo is perfectly fine and that expressing indignation over this sort of thing is creating discomfort.

What of the "discomfort" associated with the perpetuation of the status quo?  The mounting indignities experienced each and every Halloween when people parade around in insulting and offensive costumes (and all the stereotypical reductionism that entails) don't qualify as problematic?  It's only a problem when offensive costumes are "ruined" for the people wearing them?

It's as though being called "racist" is worse than actually being subjected to racism.

damb seriously can i be a mod?
bigj505 seems to hold an opinion about these sorts of costumes that I don't share.  To say that he, after years of exemplary service, is therefore less qualified than someone who's been banned more times than I'd care to recall and can't even seem to go a solid week without a warning, is pretty obnoxious and opportunistic.  Odds are, he personally helped migrate your account from the previous platform over to our current site.

If someone posted a picture of themselves wearing a costume like this in a PYP thread, I would take administrative action against them.  I would expect bigj to do the same, even if he doesn't personally find such a thing offensive.

I'm not so egotistical as to demand that every single staff member holds exactly the same beliefs that I do about every single issue.  We're more concerned about their ability to enforce our policies, support our fellow members, and make our community a better place.

I dig when you post Meth. Can always count on you to come through with the heartfelt and thought worthy posts.

you really are like dr. manhattan lol.

A part of me says this isn't offensive because dude seemed genuine. But then as a grown adult you cannot be so idiotic. I put the fact that if I were to dressed up as Bruce Lee and pulled on the corners of my eyes, then thats uncalled for. Doing black face is basically the same equivalent.

I grew up knowing about the history of black face, seeing that my dad collected vintage memorabilia. The things from the late 1800s and early 1900s always made me think how ruthless people were by making a mockery about black people.

And posting black people in white face saying, "Look they did it too". Doesnt justify it.

He should have:

1. Paired up with a fake reporter
2. Had that reporter walk up to blonde chicks and start to interview
3. Stepped in with the "I'ma let you finish"

At the end of the day, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr should be immensely proud.
