5th Grade Teacher Dresses in Blackface for Halloween

I believe he knew what he was doing.....especially in this day and age. For that, he gets what he deserves.

So now we are giving passes to white people putting on makeup to appear black as long as it's under certain circumstances???

I guess I'm not surprised since yall giving passes on them saying the N word as long as they are rapping along to their favorite song or around their friends and use "gga" instead of "ger".

:smh: :smh: :smh:

Wonder how this thread wouldve looked if he dressed up as Jackie Chan and tried to look as "authentic" as he did with this costume. :nerd:

that has nothing to do with black face.

there is no history of white face or yellow face as a mockery and to insinuate or to deflect a lack of uproar from other members is idiotic and clearly race baiting

Oh you can bet he was talking like a jig too. Let's not pretend there isn't a history here. I'm not at all outraged, but I think it's stupid they don't see that as being an issue.

The south and educators seem to be a common theme in this every year which is odd.

But u also have to remember that they're erasing the history or rewriting it as well. I'm sure the percentage of people born after 1980 doesn't even know what blackface is. To them, it's just racist to paint your face to look like a Black person, they don't know the historical context.

But here's the thing, A lot of White people think it's ok to wear racially insensitive attire all in the name of fun. There's a pic w/ face paint for African, Chinese, and Indian (Native American) costumes. It's all fun and jokes but let somebody run around w/ a star of David and some tattered clothing and all hell would break loose.

Im just curious to see how this thread wouldve turned out. That is all

while it may be a separate issue there actually is a history of racist caricature in this country depicting asians in the most negative light

See Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's for the most famous example of "yellow face" as mockery

There is an equivalent for almost every minority group

Sad but true

why cant we just shut up and not say anything at all?

lets let these white people have their fun :smh:

Halloween only comes around once a year.

Maybe we should adopt an Xmas tradition from the Netherlands, so they can celebrate twice a year.

Let the white folks go crazy with the black/brown paint and makeup.

I can understand why he did it to make the costume more believable, but he shouldn't have done it based on principle alone.

African Americans scream racism for everything, in this case it was more ignorance than racism. Eddie Murphy has played a Caucasian man with zero backlash, how is a white man playing Kanye any different? I would understand if it was just portraying a black man and they had gold fronts, braids and a gun but it's a celebrity who happens to be black.

Before anyone claims I'm white, I'm not and I'm not mixed either.

For Halloween I'm wearing a white T-shirt with the word "SOULLESS" written across

If anyone asks, I'm dressed as a white person....

It's not the fact that he wasn't portraying the stereotypical "Black man" that is a problem, it's the fact that he used black face to do it. If he wanted to look like Kanye he could have just used the shades, blazer with the shirt, or dress up in the silly @## clothing he's been putting out lately, and call it a day.

While I still don't think it's okay if the roles were reversed, nor should it be excused, Black face holds a stronger bond in the history of the exploitation of the African American individual. So of course its going to strike more of a nerve than "white face", it was used as a means to degrade Blacks for years.

It's not "screaming racism for nothing". As Meth said, this happens every year. More importantly, I don't even understand the purpose for dressing as Kanye other than the fact that he is Black. There was no taste to the costume. It wasn't to say he wanted to be the College Dropout mascot. I think its safe to say there was more intent to wear blackface, than to be Kanye for Halloween.

The fact that there are BLACK people in this thread who don't understand the history associated with this or see it as harmless shows a lot. They a re-writing history right in front of our faces and downplaying, covering up or totally omitting things from our past to make it seem like we are overreacting and these kinds of things are "no big deal".

wonder where DBZ fans stand on this teacher situation?.....
It's been known anime been racist. A select few actually depict black ppl as humans and for some odd reason their main characters tend to be ambiguous looking, straight up not Asian yet are clearly from Asia :smh:

You may not be mixed or white but you're definitely ignorant.

The false equivalence to Eddie doing a comedy skit and black face is pathetic.

So where is the line going to be drawn for Halloween costumes? Go into most Halloween themed stores, and you'll find costumes that push the envelope. We see this every year with how people choose to go out on the 31st? What's the end game here? It's not just the blackface, but making fun of gender, other races, tragic deaths, pop culture, etc.

RDJ portrayed a black man and it's obvious people can understand the difference from black face and doing something for harmless fun.

99% of the time if a white person dresses his face with brown paint I assume black face.

I'm not sure how I fell about this.

Doesn't bother as others have in the past.

edit

After further review, this shouldn't be accepted.

Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used by performers to represent a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the proliferation of stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified ****".

Oh, and look the slang term "Co on" is asterisked out on here.

i agree. theres an awesome filipino history exhibit in cali that people should check out and see the no blacks and no yellows and all the segregation type stuff that exists.

but as an asian man i can never compare my people's plight  to what this country has done to black people. I can only stand and fight along side for all civil rights.
