Vince Staples Critiques 1990's Hip Hop Music Calling It Overrated, N.O.R.E & Tyler The Creator Respo

I mean if he was 7 in 1999 why the hell would he be listening to Wu-Tang or whatever.

Like he said man he was busy being a kid. He was supposed to pretend that he liked albums he really didn't?

And lol @ "attachment to 1970's gangbanging"...what? I'm aware that they originated way back but if he got involved in his youth what the hell does that have to do with them originating in the 1970's?

I don't see why people catch feelings over other people's personal preferences.
Hip-hop was a part of my childhood. I started listening around 3-4 years old. Music overall. Michael and Janet Jackson. My mom was big on Madonna. Me and my bro went through the MC Hammer phase. Used to get whipped for scratching up my mom's records. I had Doggystyle in 3rd/4th grade.

His dad was a Crip according to his music.

What he said was pretty dumb, and when called out he became a kid again.

He said the 90s gets credit, he doesn't know why then states the names of 2 of the biggest hip-hop artist EVER, who's careers were in the 90s. Then mentions another who started in the 90s.

And his album is titled 'Summertime 06', that's damn near 10 years ago, but he's mad at people praising the 90s while he remains attached to a previous decade.

He tweets as if he was well nurtured as a kid, but just the other day he said he became a Crip to kill people. He's a DOPE rapper, but he has a lot to learn as a contributor to hip-hop and as a young man. Challenging people to fades via Twitter because they don't agree with you? Sorta hypocritical. Sounds like HE was catching feelings

It's hard to tell if Vince was serious bout the tuff talk cause he's very sarcastic and jokey jokey

He's also pretty smart and it shows in his interviews

His thoughts on 90s rap is whatever to me tho

He trolls a lot so I'd like to see where this goes

I respect Vince Staples, but he comes off as one of those people that tries way too hard to be different. What he said should have stayed in his head. I completely agree with Noreaga.

I got into black music at a young age too. My MC Hammer phase was crazy. Hell even today, my mom and grandmom will look at me & start smiling when a MC Hammer album comes on because they remember how hyped I use to get off him. Even went and bought 3-4 of his album at the beginning of this year because of those memories.

^Yo that was basically me too  I had that 'Too Legit To Quit' vhs and used to do all the moves, I may have not been older than 5 years old.

Vince didnt say the 90s albums are overrated, he was just saying he aint grow up on it and you can tell. The whole point of this article was for him to DEFLECT the notion that he said it was overrated & it turned into more than just that. Tyler is more along the one who said them 90s albums dont do nothing for him which is surprising to me. I think if Vince actually listened to some 90s albums he would like them

Hell that's still hard to believe since he's from Long Beach. You mean to tell me this kneegrow wasn't bumping Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound and their affiliates as a youngster? You telling me the older people around him wasn't constantly blasting those artists when they were around him? His *** definitely grew up on that ish.

I don't think Vince is that good of a rapper for me to be concerned about his opinion on other rappers or eras.

and him pulling out the gang stuff

He was born in 1993. When he was 10 years old...G-Unit was the biggest thing in rap. Snoop Dogg wasn't popping at that time. It's like being shocked that a 10 year old right now didn't see Kobe when he was on top.

We hear all types of **** when we're 4,5,6, etc. but music doesn't really start resonating with you until you hit 10-11. Prior to them you aren't really curating what you listen to.

Snoop wasn't popping? Wasn't this around the same time Beautiful and all that **** he did with Pharrell was out ?
Snoop was on the damn P.I.M.P. remix with 50 too. Snoop's never been irrelevant since he's hit the scene, whether his music was good or bad at the time.

I am saying, a lot of cats here have their history twisted at times.

If you believe that in 2003, snoop was at a level where teenagers were rushing to listen to his music and brining his name up in when it came to the who's who of rap...I don't know what else to tell you. I was 17...and ****** did not give a **** about snoop Dogg as a rapper. He's a pop culture icon, so relevancy in that regard has always and will always be there long after he dies...but as a rap artist? No. His peak in popularity was in the mid 90s. Sure he's had a hit or two in the 2000s, but he has not at all been one of the most popular artists in the new millennium.

Back to the original point...if you can't see how Vince staples...who was TEN YEARS OLD during the time we're talking about didn't "grow up" on snoop...I don't know what else to tell you.

i think the way he approached it was a bit careless tho

.  how you gon say somethin u kno is gonna pop off and not expect a reaction?  born in 84 and I can attest to  never rocking with the 80's simplistic rhyme pattern does that make it wrong? Cats in they 40s got Rakim or Kane as the GOAT and a ***** from the 90s can have Nas or BIG... its the same **** from generation to generation.  let my dude live.

Snoop had "Beautiful" in 02.
"Drop It Like It's Hot" in 04.

2 of his biggest Billboard hits.

Never heard any of those albums tho.

**** I've only heard 2 Snoop albums all the way through.

lol I can't lie, listening to a Snoop album all the way through is hard to do. His first two albums are just him repeating the same rhymes in almost every song.

You should either listen to Doggystyle again or get your ears checked out.

You can't tell me he don't be using some of the same lines on multiple tracks. Don't know if he was doing it on both of his first two projects, but he was definitely doing it on one of them.

All I needed to see was "I was born in 1993"

These are the type of dudes that think Drake is top 5 all time.

I heard 'Malice In Wonderland'.

I was at the 'Bush' listening session, heard about 40% of the album and got a chance to meet him, chop it up with him. REALLY good guy.
Last Snoop album I listened to start to finish was Blue Carpet Treatment
My homie tried to get me to listen to that ****.

He has spit that verse from "Gz and Hustlers" for 22 years

very corny of him .
The artist that inspired him got
the blueprint from the 90's artist
so maybe he doesn't understand that they progressed the genre for the artist he likes in the 2000's

I was born in 1994 and Snoop was everywhere when I was 10.
And that's in Belgium, not even the US.
I vividly remember because I hated rap at the time and always got pissed off at the constant Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent on the radio and tv.
