Vince Staples Critiques 1990's Hip Hop Music Calling It Overrated, N.O.R.E & Tyler The Creator Respo

"Those 90s Rap albums do nothing for me," Tyler The Creator says.


Vince Staples took to Twitter today (October 2 to express his frustration over headlines that said he thought 1990s Rap was overrated.

"I was born in 1993 in Long Beach, California and I don't remember any of it because I was a baby," Staples says in a TIME video entitled "Rapper Vince Staples Explains Why The 90s Are Overrated," "but I'm pretty sure it was nice. ...90s get a lot of credit. I don't really know why. Biggie and Tupac, those are the staples of the 90s. That's why they get the golden era credit. There's not a 50 Cent in the 90s. They don't even have a Kanye. Jay Z's biggest song, his only number one happened a couple years ago."

The "Señorita" rapper responded to people criticizing him for being what they deemed disrespectful to the decade.

"****** telling me I wouldn't exist without 90s hip hop as if I don't have a mother or father," he says. "Speaking of such my mother apologized for having me too late to experience Keith Murray and shes sorry for letting you all down. In 1999 I was 7 years old and toy story 2 had just dropped you ****** really think I was worried about hip hop?"

Noreaga was one of those who called out Staples for his comments.

"Just don't call something overrated if u ain't live in it to appreciate its value in the 1st place that's all!!!" he writes on Twitter.

"@noreaga I said I aint listen to it cause I didn't I aint never talk down you tryna say slick **** thats corny," Staples responds.

Tyler, The Creator joined in on the conversation to agree that Staples , who are in their early 20s, are too young to have developed an attachment to 1990s Rap.

"I BE THINKING THE SAME ****," the Odd Future rapper says. "LIKE THOSE 90S RAP ALBUMS DO NOTHING FOR ME."

I dont agree with Vince & Tyler on this at all. But Vince has always said he dont care for past music so its not surprising. I do think this is a problem within hip hop tho. We're the only genre where that its fans & artists dont seem to appreciate or even know the legends & pioneers that came before them & paved the way for them

Cause its a trendy genre where only the rappers thats hot at the moment get paid attention to. Not many casual fans go back & listen to the classics and nor do they care to either. Its a genre where something that came out 5 years ago or more is basically ancient to some. Its a dumb way of thinking

Funny that he's too young to develop an attachment to 90s rap but he developed an attachment to 1970s gangbangin.

He's also on 90s rapper Common's album. Signed to 90s producer NO ID's label a part of Def Jam a 80s label.

This is my issue with rap right now. The lack of knowledge, the lack of "think before you speak", and the lack of Consequence's". This social media era is the absolute worst

It's a damn shame too, but that's what happens when the genre is pretty much based on being a "young man's game". It sucks too, cause many other genres are celebratory of their elders, while we're dismissive of them. Minus a select few newer dudes, I much rather hear a vet releasing new stuff than entertain some of the brand new artists.

What about Andre 3k? Jay-Z definitely had songs in the 90s, hell, 3 albums. Cash Money/HotBoys, Lil Wayne, Too Short, Spice 1, Geto Boys, UGK, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul. I was born in '87 and listen to everyone from. Whodini, Curtis Blow to Chief Keef or ASAP Rocky. Embarrassing. If he does not care about those before him, why is he even in the hip hop/rap genre? He should become a trucker or delivery guy, if that's the case.

I appreciate both as well, but it's some ppl who act as though the 90's are the end all be all of rap music. Like when I tell ppl Ross IN MY OPINION is better than Biggie and they act like its so unfathomable just because they grew up looking up to BIG like he was Jesus. I don't really wanna open that can of worms again though but I'm saying there are better rappers out here today then there were in the 80's, 90's, and 2000's. Not all, but some... Once a bar is set, there will always be somebody up next to surpass it.

I think there's more TALENT today than hip-hop has ever seen, but what made the 90s so good was rappers from all different skill levels and abilities were making quality product throughout the decade. If you're getting an AMAZING project these days it's coming from a select group of artist

The fact that dude feels he needs to elbow 90's hip hop in order to create space speaks to the long shadow it still casts.
We shall see if these young dudes create the type of art to remain a part of the discussion 20-25 years from now for the next set of youngins to besmirch.

I was 9 in '99 and i was buying Wu/Kast albums by the time I hit 12/13 just because the Internet was big enough by then to do research on what albums were critical to the culture and you could sample snippets of albums on Amazon plus get recommendations. Lame *** excuse on his part and he was being corny trying to get at Nore over some crip **** out of nowhere

Just by reading the replied to NORE you can kinda tell this has his head too far up his ***.
