When the Phillies were looking to trade Hamels, one of the players they supposedly wanted was Aaron Judge, who scouts are saying is a stud and could be in the majors next year. Why sign someone to block him?
He won't be in the majors next year (2016). He's not remotely ready from a batter's perspective. Sure he'll be able to mash it out. But at a .220 clip at best currently. Also needs to improve defensively. Unlike Bird who has to be up in MLB because nothing more he can learn in AAA, Judge has a lot of room to grow.
As for it will block him. I wouldn't be so sure. If they trade Gardner, and slot in Heyward or Cespedes, they have a slot for Judge in 2017 for Beltran's retirement. Or if they trade Beltran, and sign Heyward or Cespedes, they can trade Gardner's 2 year /$25 or $26mil before 2017 if they really believe in Judge by then. Also I don't even think you need to slot Judge into the OF. Teix is in the last year of his deal, so you can get him some time at 1B behind Bird. Also could get him time at DH as well. Once ARod deal expires after 2017, Judge may very well be everyday DH. I think come 2018, he's just as likely to be an everyday DH as he is to be everyday OF.
And for Heyward and lesser extent Upton, the opportunity to get a prime OF in FA before 30 is rare, you might as well jump at it.
