Spike Lee's CHIRAQ trailer

all I'm saying is recognize that facts are not excuses.
Thats the whole point. We know that its a FACT the systemic oppression exist, but it is being used as an excuse to not act.
Its one in the same, a fact being used AS an excuse.

I don't think you appreciate the power of mental shackles. You think a computer in the pocket is some type of equalizer? The tool won't change the mentality.(Wooorrrrld Staaaarrrr). Some might take a hammer and build a house. Others might take a hammer and bust windows.

And someone knowing they are crippled doesn't have the power to suddenly walk.

I would like to ask you specifically how you feel about COINTELPRO. Is it an "excuse" that thriving communities were infiltrated by the government and disrupted/destroyed?

Again... You can make it. I can make it. But "we"? I'm not so sure. Not all of us have the strength or the means or the circumstances. I went through an "excuses" phase where i held your position. But a lot of it is simple "acknowledgement." A lot of this is by design.

Systemic removal?
Engineer?

Do we as black people not have any agency in our actions? Is it really all the white mans fault?
Do you not believe in personal responsibility and accountability?

Show me where in my very limited response I even ******* hinted that black people had no fault in the situation?

**** out my face with that ******** fam.

Im sorry but we have got to stop with the F ****** excuses!
Dudes in here talmbout the effects of slavery on the modern black man. I overstand all of that.
But as a black man I wonder, how long are we gonna say " but but but slavery, and the systemic oppression of my people because of slavery?"

We, as modern black men have known our entire lives about the disadvantages we face in a society, built to oppress us.
The fact that that system exist should not be enough to discourage us from at least trying to overcome

Some of you dudes 10 years later still gone be talmbout but but slavery and "the system". 20 years later...30 years later... Some of yall gone look up and be 50 still talmbout " but the system".

What Im saying is, if our brothers and sisters could do it back then( for example Black Wall Street in the 1910s and 1920s), at a time when the systemic oppression and racism was a million times worse than it is today then why cant we come together today?

I do agree with cashbanks cashbanks about the breaking down of our family structures. It puts us at a disadvantage when we dont have strong male role models to show the young cats how to be a man. But even that is a partially self inflicted wound IMO. (notice the emphasis put on partially)

As far as education goes what can I say? We have mini computers in our pockets but knowledge will only come to those that seek it, and those wise enough to listen when being told.If you put all your energy into watching drill rap videos on Youtube, updating your timeline, and getting the latest scoop on the Kardashians, then how can you even begin to be "woke" by any standard?

If anything that is our main disadvantage. The fact that the mental prisons are so much more elaborate, with enough distractions to keep you locked inside forever.
But even then we could break free. My question is WHY DONT WE?

Repped

But they do see the barriers.
They rap about it in their garbage *** drill rap videos.

They already know if they sell drugs they more than likely will end up dead or in jail. But what do they do?
Sell drugs anyway thinking "Im smart. I will be the exception to the rule." Fast forward... they locked up or dead.

They already know if they gangbang they will more than likely end up dead or in jail. But what do they do? Bang anyway.
Which is stupid within itself. Bangin is one of THE dumbest, pointless most fruitless activities that a person can ever do.

You grew up seeing your dad bang... he's dead, your brother banged...he's in jail for life, your other brother bangs...he's in a wheelchair, your cousin banged... he's dead;
But yet something about that lifestyle says to them, "yeah, I think I need to bang too". At what point do you just start to call that natural selection? OR insanity.
And that's what you call "being alive" or "living on your own terms"? And Im still trying to figure out how killing each other puts food on the table.

If these dudes spent half the time building the community up as they do destroying it with their ignorance, we would already be halfway there.
After all arent those the principles that the original gangs were founded on in the first place?
If you so about your set, why not learn the history, besides the signs and tags, and get back to those positive roots?

The choices are there, but sadly people choose to ignore them. Its not like the 90s where someone can say "Well he didnt know any better", or "Thats all he grew up around"
Cause in the 90s if you were isolated in the hood you might not know ANYTHING about the world outside of your hood or city.
That excuse in no longer valid. It's 2015 these fools got computers IN THEIR POCKET!. The entire world is connected by social media and a person can see images from anywhere in their palm.
There are plenty of things to aspire to be and its easier than ever to become those things.

Repped.

I'm definetly going see this movie. I've been a spike fan since School Daze. I think a lot of people don't appreciate spike's story telling style. His movies are more surrealist mixed with some social satire.

 no **** it's a satire, dudes are acting like they should get a medal for noticing that. I think where people have issue is having any sort of satire or humor revolving around something so dire that hasn't even been properly addressed in a serious tone on a national level as far as film as yet. Will check it out though before jumping the gun.

Addressed in what way though? I`m hoping this movie shows the perspective of the Social Engineering that creates these environments i.e.. Removal of Resources such as schools and jobs. No matter what if the process that created this environment is not addressed then all people will see is "thugs" on film killing each other. You have idiots in this thread talking about their grand parents who came to this country by choice and did good, well nobody gives a damn about them honestly because majority of the blacks native to America did not ask to be brought here, they did not ask to go through the history they had to endure, they did not ask to be discriminated against when it came to creating their own communities that were independent only to be destroyed by lynch mobs. All these folks on that immigrant "my people came here and did well", can go back to their damn countries, because if it was so sweet they wouldn't have had to leave their nations. These folks can't even build in their own damn nations yet have the audacity to criticize people who were literally breed to by a permanent underclass in America.

Spike Lee clarifies the first "Chi-Raq" trailer and releases a more serious trailer:

Repped for posting that. I honestly wish I would have saw that trialer first prior to the other. That is the tone that I expected

This has been a thread that has sparked some interesting debates thank you all for sharing your opinions on the matter.

As many can see and should see, we have along way to go as a people

 @ Spike listening to criticisms and buckling under that pressure.

No need to respond to fools that don't know what satire is.

1) But they do see the barriers.
They rap about it in their garbage *** drill rap videos.

1) You don't even see the barriers obviously. and you're saying they do. the barriers aren't what they rap about in drill videos. It's about schools not teaching them to THINK AT ALL. It's about not knowing that they have choices. They know they will end up dead or in jail, they don't think they are an exception. The system has told them that's they're only option. They don't fear it. Which is why killing is so trivial to them.

Teachers went on strike in Chicago, my brother got a free extra vacation for a few weeks... Didn't learn anything. Hung out with homies.

My mom told my 11th grade brother to do his homework... one of the assignments was a packet of word searches. He circled random letters across the page. I said "these aren't even words". His response... "The teacher won't even look at them anyway. "

He has a HS Diploma now. I still have to walk him through the process of life to stay on track. I just recently got him a good job. I hope his dejected attitude won't cost him his job before he matures a bit more. Thats a barrier. Without someone to help them through, they don't have any belief that there's a way out.

2) With your pops dead or locked up and your mother strung out.. you might say "hey i'd like to be doing a little better than them when I get older"

But if you can't find anybody doing well, who will show you how? You can't just hop on the internet and understand the economy and finance and sociology unless you have a certain level of reading comprehension. Now you are back at barrier 1.

Barrier 2 is someone comes along to take care of you and stand in as a parent and teaches you the same lifestyle. You respect them because you are young, naive, and feel indebted to them for taking care of you.

Barrier 3 is you find a role model and they won't help you because they already have painted you a certain way because you speak poorly, have dreads, fit the description of criminals in Chicago, plus they can be certain you didn't pick up many skills in high school.

3) They ramped up policing in black communities so much AND displaced the people who were in projects to raise property values for hipsters in the city so the OGs who upheld the community and values are disconnected from the foot soldiers now. They are mercenaries out for themselves only.

4) Like i said they hop on the internet and the rich uneducated blacks are telling them to keep doing what they are doing. They can't get into college and follow the educated blacks like Neil DeGrasse Tyson's twitter because he is too far removed from their understanding their grades weren't good enough. Most can't write an essay as coherent as this post.

I will treat the second trailer as an apology for the first. Even though he didn't actually say he was sorry. We will see if the movie addresses things properly. I wont pay to see it however. Maybe if its good i'll buy some merchandise to make up for it.

That second trailer seemed slapped together of random serious scenes.

No music, no plot .

But this looked interesting either way. Will peep.

When does this actually come out?

 That's exactly what that was.

Had scenes cut in to the middle of conversations with lines about death or w/e to make it appear like this aint a funny scene.

It wasn't even edited good the way one scene cut from the next. Spike must've said I don't want to spoil the whole damn movie so let me just give you all of these good acting Angela Basset scenes in the middle so you know it aint a comedy

Yeah there was no need for that.

The people that don't get it...don't get it. That's on them.

In no way shape or form did I watch the original trailer and think it was a comedy.

Yeah there was...

...like I said before, callin' the movie "Chi-raq" is where he ****** up at.

Making a motion picture named "Chi-raq" is basically lightin' up a big *** "Bat Signal" for goons - they ain't watchin' the trailer expecting satire, or even knowing what the **** "satire" is.

In a old *** freestlye dissin' Nas from the State Prop days, Oschino said it best: "In the hood, we don't know the definition of 'ether.'"

You wanna get thru to the kids that actually need to see this movie?

...start by speaking their language.

What Spike did was try to take their language and put his own creative license on it...

...and as you can see, they ain't goin' for it.

Of course black folks are mad spike ain't releasing the ignorant type of movie they wanted

What exactly do you mean by "their language"?

I don't think Spike Lee made this film specifically for misguided youth. It's an exposè to the world...not any one specific demographic.

Let's be serious, a film isn't going to curb violence in Chicago. It's amazing and quite telling that people think taking the traditional "hood conscious" boys n the hood, menace 2' society approach would have been the way to go.

As for the name, let's face it....controversy sells. Controversy also sparks conversation, which is what's needed.

I also find it incredible that people are mad at spike lee but have no problems supporting (insert dumb rapper here) who unequivocally glorifies the violent culture of places like Chicago.

Well from watching the vid with the 2nd "trailer" where Spike explains this is a satire and not a comedy he seems to be very clear and very adamant about what he's setting the record on.

He doesn't address ppl who don't know what satire is. I think you're kinda assuming he made this for the kids or goons to watch and learn something.

This may just come down to yall not liking Spike's style or approach. I'd just say look at his track record. Actually get a good look at his movies. He'll speak "their" language but put a spin on it like he always does.

As for the Chiraq stuff even when talking about the movie it's like he's referring to Chicago as Chiraq like that's it's new name  I don't think he thinks it's a joke either nor do I think he think he's presenting a movie that he will go over ppl's heads. It's just for an audience that will respond to it.
