Spike Lee's CHIRAQ trailer

The crazy thing is, people in Chicago are so touchy about this subject that if Spike would've made some straight up gutter, hood **** they would try to say that the movie still wasn't a good representation of what's going on there. Every person I know from Chicago acknowledges that there's an issue, but that the media (like always) makes it seem like it's the only city with a murder problem.

Spike wasn't gonna win either way with this film.

Sure look like a comedy.

The premise that girls will stop having sex with thugs and that thugs will put down their guns if they can't get the yams

lol word, they just gonna start pulling out the guns on the yams and force em to give it up like in dont be a menace

"platinum rapper mr. cheeks"

read your post before i saw the video, almost pissed my pants lmao

Damn, he had to put Nick Cannon and the big bobblehead from Dream girls in it? That's like seeing Bubbles being anything but a basehead, I just can't see it.

That big bobblehead girl is from Chicago, and is a product of the environment that is the subject of this movie. Her role in this film is probably more significant than anyone else's seeing as though she had her mother, brother, and 7 year old nephew murdered in Chicago just 7 years ago.

I know. Doesn't mean she has to be a convincing actor to me because she has roots there.

True. Lose/Lose situation. Should've left it alone.

Trailer looks decent. Can't take nick cannon playing any role other than the love don't cost a thing type role. Hopefully spike doesn't disappoint

Seems the trailer is generating enough attention and talk just like the Dear White People trailer did.

I love all of Spike Lees projects so I'm sure I will love this. Will just have to treat it like I did School Daze after I joined my fraternity.

Keef, Young Chop and Lil Durk should all be in this movie. New version of Killa Season, Chicago style

Miami Tail is easily in my top 3 worst movies ever off the top of my head...along with Jack and Jill.

I'm sooooo SICK and tired of this "Anyhood USA" from 2003 that Hollywood seems stuck in. This does not represent the current state of Chicago, or the people and culture responsible for the name "Chi-raq". Terrible casting, inauthentic etc etc.

Got dudes in Chicago wearing red & blue rags like its Compton  :smh:.

Spike is too far removed. He sees the headlines, knows what growing up in the hood is like, but has been gone so long....he's forgot how to accurately capture the essense.

Spike washed.

As a person from Chicago, I can't appreciate the direction he went with this film at all.

1. this is a serious and heartfelt issue linked to generational gang violence, racism and gentrification, and lack of resources and education for the youth.

2. maybe satire / comedy would be more effective in relaying a message to an audience without their guard up BUT this writing doesn't take any elements from the way Chicago really is. The characters feel like the urban folks that Spike is familiar with from either New York or Atlanta. No authenticity at all.

3. Feels like any white person seeing this will feed into the image of black people that they want to reinforce. Stupid and driven by animalistic desires.

Nah, if anything a dark and gritty film would only play into the savagry sterotypes and make people view it as another "hood movie". People found boyz n da hood and menance 2 society to be entertainment more so than movies with a message. Spike is doing the reverse for this film.

You are entitled to your opinion though, and if anything white people hate spike and have never liked his films so this def isnt for them lol

I'm still mad at myself for watching that Miami Tail movie. Trina owes me a lapdance or some head for that.

Bruh that premise is so ridiculous that it couldn't have been thought of twice. He jacked it.

Lmfao if yall really think Miami Tail was the insperation for this

No.

Clearly it isn't. But I'm not impressed by some Greek classic either just cuz it's ancient. People out here acting like you aren't high Brow if you've never heard or seen Lysistrata.

When Hollywood takes elements from Anansi the Spider, I'll be more interested and impressed. The world is bigger and more ancient than Western Europe.
