What caused the shift in public opinion when it comes to homosexuality?

I shouldn't have to do this, but I'll go ahead and preface that I have no qualms or ill will towards the LBGT community. I advocate people living their lives in accordance with their own happiness. What another person does usually affects me none, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Don't misconstrue my question, or this topic of discussion, with any negative sentiments. Not here for that.

I took a class in human sexuality back in undergrad and I recall learning about the early plight of the gay community. Beatings, arrests, public shaming, etc. we're the norm throughout the 20th century. Even more contemporarily there was still a lot of repression towards their lifestyle. Think as recently as the late 90s and early 2000s, the slander was still there and the public sentiment seemed relatively passive. Think of pop culture icons like Eminem who used the f word (the one that rhymes with maggot rather than duck) and caught a fair share of flack, but not enough to where you got the feeling that there was huge public outcry. In 2015, you'd absolutely never hear that word being used. Hell, I just referred to it as "the f word".

I was talking to my girl the other day and she jokingly said "modern family is the reason for it all. Can and Mitch showed us that homosexuals are regular people also." Again, she said that in jest. Don't take that seriously.

But that idea cause the thought to cross my mind and I realize that I can't pinpoint any particular instance that caused the pendulum to swing. So what do you guys think? NT is my go to place when I want various degrees of perspective. Hopefully this topic can go off without a hitch.

Unity, Gay agenda coming together for a common goal/ respect. Any time a large group of people come together as a whole they are respected.

It was a slow come up honestly. But its also running neck and neck with atheism and a lot of other things that are symptoms of choice saturation

Millennial are the multiple choice generation. Even when it comes to sex gender based issues.

LBGT community ppl being fed up with being marginalized and belittled. Not that they weren't before seems to me they've been going harder this century.

Gay marriage becoming legal in most states, this more accepting generation, and money.

Also the whole social media shaming and boycotting puts a lot of pressure on ppl.

Gay people hid the agenda til the time was right. Secret lifestyle; long-term plan.

Campbells soup is the driving force behind the acceptance of homosexuality.

Gays control music, fashion, film. The youth of today don't see homosexuality as out of the ordinary. Bigotry stems from having a low IQ and living in a bubble. The descendents of those people are now growing up on Youtube and Pinterest. Also we are becoming less religious as a society. Agnosticism/Atheism has increased 10% over the last decade. The shackles of the mind are being freed.

People are diverting there hate towards other things
This. Globally it is far from accepted though.

Being gay is still illegal in 70something countries and is actually punishable by death in some.

I would assume the rise of atheism also helps. A christian is much more likely to be unaccepting of homosexuality than an atheist.

There's also a clear media agenda that pushes homosexuality, which is a good thing imo. It forces people to deal with it rather than just living in their bubble of bigotry.

I'm from the Bay Area it's always been accepted here...that being said I've seen pushed more throughout the last few years. Da emasculation of the male? There is something to that.

I think this has a lot to do with it too. You know America goes the great lengths to LOOK like the greatest civilization ever.

I think its just like racism doe. Folk talk at that acceptance jazz in public, but go right on back to the bigotry behind closed doors.

More exposure, high profile gay and lesbian celebrities, more openness to sexual freedoms.

Also agree with the brigading done by people online. It's making people afraid of coming across homophobic.

this is seen as propaganda to the rest world.

They don't enjoy societal comforts to fight for something like Gay rights when They are busy fighting for access to clean drinking water and very basic things we have that are considered a luxury.

I agree with this. Also the declining religious influence on the youth of the country is making them more accepting to things that were once considered out of the norm. Decriminalized marijuana use, abortion, gay marriage and social acceptance, a black president was all out of the question as little as 15 years ago. Gonna be interesting to see where we are in the next 10-15 years
