What caused the shift in public opinion when it comes to homosexuality?

As an outsider of the gay ("community's") plight, I'm interested in hearing a discussion on some of their "self-inflicted wounds." What I mean is, in some cases, not only did some folks stay "in the closet," but some public figures actually spoke out AGAINST the very lifestyle they led in secrecy. Is there a general consensus on those folks within the community? (Ex: Ted Haggard)
check out this doc. called Outrage.  It's about closeted gay politicians, mainly republican, that have a history of voting against pro-gay legislation

I mean not even a year ago on the NT community if you supported the gay community people questioned your sexuality so I can only imagine on the national scale. Maybe in their brain the only way for people not to figure out you may be gay is to be against it.

shame, self hatred, fear of persecution.  Years of repressing and trying to beat back their own true feelings

Not sure why no one has mentioned this but I forget that the majority of NT just jumped off the porch.

A major move in public opinion happened when Ellen came out on her show.
It was major news for a long time after that. She was basically this generation's Bruce Jenner.
Then there start to be more networks sitcoms and shows that catered to the LGBT community, but she was the 1st openly gay character on TV.

Ellen is a comedic genius though.

Gays control music, fashion, film. The youth of today don't see homosexuality as out of the ordinary. Bigotry stems from having a low IQ and living in a bubble. The descendents of those people are now growing up on Youtube and Pinterest. Also we are becoming less religious as a society. Agnosticism/Atheism has increased 10% over the last decade. The shackles of the mind are being freed.

Like Muslims

Truth.

Also Eminem and Elton John moment.

It actually started in new york.
Manhattan to be precise.
The stonewall riots in 1969 brought awareness to the bigotry of individuals towards the lgbt community.

...n come to think of it I haven't heard anybody use that word in my day to day In a min it seems , probly months ...things really done changed
I hear the actual English word on a near daily basis and our native language here is Dutch.

A lot of English terms have made it into our language. It became really common to use f** or f****t as an insult about ~5 years ago.

Not even solely as an insult to gay people, it's being used as a common insult for someone you just don't like here. I've even heard gay people use it.

Calling something gay to express frustration or dislike is also still very common unfortunately. My close friends have absolutely zero problems with homosexuality but I'll use playing xbox as an example here. If we're playing multiplayer on Call Of Duty for example they'll often say "wow he's just camping there that's so gay", etc.

I do my best not to use it but even for me it's hard because I've been hearing this day in day out for the last decade or so.

The use of the word gay to express dislike and the f-word as a general insult has been so common for the past few years that it's really hard to root it out.

I just recently rewatched the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back... The amount of gay jokes it had I dont think would work out well today compared to bacl then definitely

I never used f word as a derogatory homosexual insult

More like how people in the 90s would call everyone ******s before it became politically incorrect

Just another word for idiot etc

Hes said he pretty much does this *** on purpose now.

lol yea he didnt need to tell me that

but the question is why?? keep his name being talked about?

You know sometimes someone will do something stupid or funny and mfers just keep harping on it over and over.

Eventually said person gets fed up and sarcastically plays along. Thats all this is.

Its almost like some people WANT him to be gay.

It would be fine. The movie just wouldn't be as successful most likely.

I mean it's Jay & Silent Bob.

South Park continues their gay jokes and they work out well today.
