Engagement Vol: Its Time

I proposed to my girl while we were in our backyard having a bonfire with just us
Guess I ruined my girls dreams

For rings, there's a sale at jamesallen.com for ring settings.

For my engagement, I took my now wife to Paris since I used to work in London and have been to Paris a few times. I proposed at pon des art (aka Lock Bridge). Locked our padlock, threw the key to the river ,and watched the Eiffel Tower light show.

Someone mentioned "asking for permission". I requested permission from my now father-in-law. It just shows respect to the dad. Just do it. Have an egoless attitude about it.

All of this.

My wife and I celebrated our first year anniversary back on October 25th.
Congrats bro what was your proposal like ?
I first started by researching online and look around brick-and-mortar stores for engagement rings. While I was browsing a local jeweler I saw a couple of rings that I believe she would like. Just before I left, I glanced at another one and I knew it would be the one. I took some pictures of it and showed it to my mom and her mom. They both loved it. I then showed the picture to her best friend and she loved it as well.

Proposal:

Christmas 2012 holiday - I proposed to her on Christmas Eve because we planned some months ago that we would be visiting our respective families on Christmas day. Once I got off work on Christmas eve, I went to her mom's house to exchange gifts. I saved a special gift for last. It was a bear wearing a shirt saying "Marie ...... Will you Marry me?" with a ring in the middle. She read the bear's shirt and immediately dropped the bear and repeated "Holy S***" about 10 times, LOL. Once she looked up, I was on one knee with the ring box opened and popped the question. With tears in her eyes, she hugged me and kissed me. After about a minute of embrace, I said "What's your answer?" She said: "Oh yes" I put the ring on her finger and we all just enjoyed the moment.

It's just a show of respect to ask. Nothing more. Even if I didn't get the 'okay', I'd just tell them, "too bad, I asked out of respect for you, I'm going through with it regardless."

I know my girls Mom will be very appreciative that I ask beforehand.

When you get to Mexico, have room service bring the ring in while having her think food is being delivered. Propose there.

Lay off with the picture taking like most folks in 2015. Make it legit and keep it off of the internet

I am literally going to Belize in a couple of weeks and wanted to purpose there but didn't like the idea of bringing a ring over there. If not that, I might do it just at dinner. The ring itself is going to eliminate my savings and put me in debt even more but we've been together for 8 years. I was at the diamond store the other day and some guy was buying a $35k ring and he's only known his girl for 7 months!!! Made my 2 carat looked like a pebble.

So why not wait until a better time? I can't imagine you want a ring to set you back that much.

LOL @ $35K for 7 months

I was supposed to purpose a long time ago and had like 2 years to save but just didn't do it right. It's my fault and saving is not my strong suit. I got a good chunk of it and honestly enough for any average girl but this is like the one thing she is materialistic about and I want to get sort of in the range of where she wants. It's the right time though and we want to have kids since she's turning 30 in 2 months.

I told my pops that I wanted to purpose at the top of the Mayan pyramid when we are in Belize and if she gave me lip, I'd kick her down the steps and start fresh for the year 2016. Haha.

Damn I feel you man. I know you want to make her happy but is the ring worth you being in debt for? I would say think long term. I am not married so it is easy for me to say but I try to look at things from a practical standpoint. That debt life is no joke man.

And then yall are probably going to move in together so the house will be another bill. I know people have made it work. Just giving my 2c.

No I know. Honestly I am not sure how to play this right but I was just talking to someone about this and sometimes you just got to plunge in it and try and resurface even if you fall into debt. I am already $9k in the hole and the ring would add $5K to it but I got a new credit card with no APR for like 2 years, so I think I can do that no prob. There's definitely a lot of other issues but first things first I guess. Thankfully, even though this might not be the manliest thing to say, she makes way more than i do and even getting a house down the road will be more credited to her and not me. So a lot of this is a group effort but this ring is obviously my own thing I got to get.

No surprise there, a decent 2 carat ring gonna run you $25k+ EASY.

You don't need to explain yourself bro, you handle your relationship how you see fit in order to make her happy....if you know that rock is important to her, pull out that credit card and give it to her.

Man nobody cares about the money issue honestly. Whatever works for your family man.

Not sure if I will ever get married but the thought of even doing that is scary.

So you wanna start off the marriage in debt?

3k-3.5k max, maybe 4 of they show me something I really like. Can't imagine dropping 10k on a ring, I'm pushing it with the limit I got now.

The ring is not for you bro...

But if the future wife is cool with it, the price of the ring shouldn't matter, I myself spent 4k and she was cool, my brotherinlaw sold his car to get his, we all go about it different, point of the matter is to make the mrs happy.

$25k? Jesus. That almost made me cry and vomit at the same time

Who the hell is out here buying 2 carat rings though. Giving us all a bad rap… I'ma be 1 carat high quality and I'm out the door.

So glad I came across this thread. Reading these responses are very comforting seeing other guys making similar sacrifices and what not. Final payment for ring is this friday with proposal coming soon afterwards. Nervous cant even begin to describe it but excited nonetheless.

I HATE jewelry! My ring is 1.5 carats which isn't huge but it's big enough to get on my nerves. I only wear my wedding band and I love it's simplicity.

I spent about 1.7k on my girls. I thought that was insane but apparently I got off cheap after reading this thread
