My oldest daughter's husband took me and my wife out to dinner and asked us for our blessings. We loved the guy, and he knew it, so it was more so done out of respect. We still have a great relationship to this day.

I asked my now mother-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law for their blessing to marry my wife. Not surprisingly, mom-in-law was the one I was most nervous to talk to.
My wife's dad passed away while she was young, but if he was still alive today I would've asked him.

Given I haven't considered this much since I don't ever plan on asking I'd say it depends on my relationship with the parents and more importantly the daughter's relationship with her parents.
From my reasonable perspective, if everything is at least decent on those two fronts I'd tell them I'm planning to ask. That's it really. They either gonna have to get down or lay down after I tell them.

The more I read stories and meet couples, the more blessed i feel, maybe is because I grew up with my wife and her parents known me since I was 17 but to me her mom is my second mother literally...even call her mom, hell if I'm to be completely honest me and mominlaw show each other more affection than even me and my own mom...lol
