I'm about 10 hours in, and here's some thoughts so far (in spoilers just in case, but there's no actual spoilers).
Enjoying the combat system. The option to choose between active and wait mode is good, but I feel like wait mode kind of disrupts the flow of combat sometimes. Movement during combat is fluid and as always with Final Fantasy games, is aesthetically pleasing.
Still iffy on the magic elementary system. Unless I've completely missed it, there's no clues or resources you can use to create magic, so it's just a game of trial and error. I've mostly avoided using magic for this reason.

If you haven't watched Kingsglaive, you should. The story is completely meaningless if you haven't, and the movie actually gives some context behind the characters' motives. And yes, the voice acting is utterly terrible. I honestly feel like I could've done a better job.

Here's a review of the movie.

There's a crap ton of side-quests, but none have really captured my attention and given me great satisfaction thus far. I'm enjoying the game and will likely complete the story next week, but I feel like it's missing a certain element that takes it from a great game to legendary.

If you have to watch the movie to understand the game's story, that would piss me off lol

I haven't needed to watch anything to understand any final fantasy game I've played, no reason why I should start now -__-
 
Heard the game becomes pretty linear during the second half. Any side quests I should know about that I won't be able to complete in the future?
 
I always buy the strategy guide for these games. I learned when I went through the first 3 discs of final fantasy 8 only to learn I missed out on something that I could only get in disc 1. Had to play it all over again. Have never played without a guide since.

According to the guide, at the very beginning of the game, there's already side quests you can attempt.

The mines in the beginning near hammer head and Baldwin quay is a side quest that you won't complete because you're under leveled. Get in, get the items and get out or you'll run into some beef you don't want.

Also, I haven't watched the movie but know what's going on in the game. If your in chapter 3 or 4 you're not far enough and the entire plot has yet to come together. As with most FF's, the game starts out with holes that take time to fill in.

The first thing you do in the game is a fetch quest pretty much.
 
^^ That's what I was thinking. In my experience ff has gaps at the beginning of the game and it fills in the gaps in later chapters. Didn't think this game would be any different and would need a movie to fill in the gaps. Glad it looks like I was right. I don't want to watch no movie.

I feel you on that. The movie was aight though. The story telling in FFXV isn't the best. I'm on chapter 5 and there was a point where I was like, how and why am I doing this?
 
SE is in a lose / lose situation.

You make the game like 13 with a strong story and purists ***** about how the game is too linear.

You begin the game like 15 where it's non linear and ppl are unhappy with the story.

Lol I'm saying all this, not having played the game yet. I think the game is finished installing so I'll give it a go shortly.

I have a gut feeling that I might not like the non linear style. I was never a purist.

Such a noob question...but I need to stop playing right now. There's no save points anymore, right? I can just exit the game and pick up where I leave off?

There's no saving in dungeons, but aside from that yeah auto save will get most of your progress. You can also pause and manual save as well.
 
I know the feeling, last one I played through was X and its definitely changed since then.

Best way I can describe this game is kingdom hearts meets star wars on a lord of the rings journey with a TMNT cast of 4 bros. Noctis is Leo, prompto is mike, ignis is don, and gladio is raph.

I might just, I have a old Xbox 360 laying around. How many games are in the series, I know there's a lightning returns game?

But I can't front, I do consider myself a bit of a purist and was turned off when I heard there was no towns/free roam, to me that adds a bit of relief from the otherwise chaotic story that is most FF games.

This was my first Final Fantasy and I must say I absolutely loved it. Just beat the game (campaign).

From the combat to the story telling, it was all done so well. I know people dont really like the story, but it was good enough for me.

The ending scenes after you beat the game were done incredibly well with a lot of feels

Overall, 9/10 for me.

 
You already beat the game? Did you do the side quests? I just started. I'm probably going to take a while because I like finding everything on the map and attempting side quests. Just finished my first one.

The game just feels so chill to start.

I think my only complaint is a nitpick. The facial expressions of the characters outside of cut scenes are terrible. But I think it's cuz I'm conditioned to how great cgi expressions have been in movies lately.

I did a lot of side quests because I felt like it was needed in order to progress in the game. There comes a point where the story missions gets too hard so you gotta do side quests in order to level up.

Lol I no life'd it. Got it Friday and just beat it like 10 min ago. Played till 4 AM bruh lol.

Only time I stopped was to eat, pee, school, sleep, gym
