Best thing you can do for your gut is live a stress-free lifestyle. Go for walks, meditate, yoga, chief (if that calms you down).
You can destroy your gut fast if you're stressing out all the time. It won't matter if you're taking probiotics or eating well. Remove the stressors from your life first and patch things up from there.
Some other tips:
- Eat smaller meals.
- Avoid gluten. This can literally shred your intestinal walls and create leaky gut (when particles get into your bloodstream).
- Fermented foods are more effective than probiotics. Our bodies will always prefer food over supplements. Bubbies sauerkraut is a good product you can find at Whole Foods. Probiotics are good if your gut is jacked up already or for periodical maintenance.
- Eat more garlic, raw honey, and coconut oil. They destroy bad bacteria. You might even see some weird things floating in the toilet when you start eating coconut oil.
- Eat more herbs and spices!!! In Indian culture they have low rates of stomach cancer. Paprika, turmeric, oregano, thyme.... basically every herb and spice has anti-inflammatory properties. Add it to your foods liberally every day. Hit up the spice section and try out different ones. Bad bacteria can't stand them! Teas are also good.
- If you already have bad digestion try taking digestive bitters 10 min before you eat. You can buy a $5 bottle of bitters at Walmart called Angostura Bitters, it's next to the club soda lol. You put a teaspoon of it on the back of your tongue and that sends the signal to your stomach to produce acid. Lots of people suffer from low stomach acid (stress is a big culprit!). There's lots of bitters on the market and the example I gave is a cheap one. Health food stores will carry more expensive ones that have different formulas. A bottle should last a long time as you only need a few drops on the back of the tongue.
- Digestive enzymes before meals. Not a bad idea to do both bitters and enzymes. The latter is more expensive so if your digestion feels better using only bitters than you will save a lot of money in the long run.
- Don't drink anything with your meals. Don't drink anything 30 min before or after your meals. Liquid dilutes stomach acid.
