That's always been there, but it seems like that contingency has been getting bigger lately. 

I heard some dudes say it's mainly because of his non-traditional style like JMM (JMM was respected but never really beloved by all Mexican fans), which is a part of it IMO, but there is more to it than that. 
 
JMM actually scored it a draw, but he picked Cotto to win before the fight.  MAB or Morales had Cotto winning along with JCC during the TV Azteca telecast IIRC. 

JCC said he didn't have the words to describe the robbery he just saw after the scores were announced

There is a belief among some Mexicans that his ascension to superstardom has just as much to do with his appearance, as it does with his merits as a fighter.  Which has rubbed some the wrong way for a while.  

He kind of sucks at cutting off the ring, and he's not a stalking pressure fighter with a high output, which is the style that most people associate with Mexicans.  He's an aggressive counter puncher like JMM IMO. 
 
Ill never understand the hate for canelo, hes a respectful humble dude that just wants to box and hold it down pa la raza

True on both parts.

While his style is not what would be defined as traditional "Mexican" fighter (JCC Jr, Margarito, Rios) that most people are accustomed to. That bullrush, phone booth, slugger who just keeps attacking. He's more methodical, conserves punches, counters, and packs a punch. This will sometimes turn the raza off cause the moment where he deviates from the norm and doesn't get the results people want, they'll chastise him for not being like the aforementioned fighters.

The other part has a lot to do with his complexion. Without sounding ignorant or racist, I'll make the same example of dark skinned-light skinned blacks. Plenty of times I've experienced it first hand that some Hispanics will say "es gabacho" (he's too white) or he thinks of himself as white, while others will pull or cheer for him just on the strength of him being Hispanic (Lara fight was the most obvious, as any unbiased Hispanic will tell you he lost). It's funny cause the division doesn't seem as large amongst Puerto Ricans. Without saying too much I happen to be of both ethnicities (Mexican/Puerto Rican) and I see it from both sides of the fence, but I really don't know if it's this new generation, or if we're just becoming more resentful as a society but Canelo is really a polarizing figure. Oscar wasn't like this, neither was JCC or Trinidad or Fernando Vargas but this kid gets all hate.

Marquez has a history of hating Canelo. It goes back to a time when they were on a talk show and Marquez insinuated that he was basically handed opportunities without having to pay his dues. Supposedly, Canelo snapped back and may have disrespected Marquez. Victor Ortiz feels the same way about Canelo along with being jealous that he's DLH's new superstar.

Man I do miss watching boxing on tv Aztecs on Friday night's. Most of the time there were good fights.
