I was talking to my boy earlier and he was telling me he went to a Nutritionist and the guy said he had Gluten Allergies. For the longest I just figured this to be just another new hipster fad, but the stuff his doc was saying did make sense.

Did a quick search and saw this

Common Symptoms Of Gluten Intolerance
If you have any of the following symptoms it could be a sign that you have gluten intolerance:

1. Digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, and even constipation. I see the constipation particularly in children after eating gluten.

[google_adsense_01]

2. Keratosis pilaris, also known as “chicken skin” on the back of your arms. This tends be as a result of a fatty acid deficiency and vitamin A deficiency secondary to fat-malabsorption caused by gluten damaging the gut.

3. Fatigue, brain fog, or feeling tired after eating a meal that contains gluten.

4. Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lupus, psoriasis, scleroderma or multiple sclerosis.

5. Neurologic symptoms such as dizziness or feeling of being off balance

6. Hormone imbalances such as PMS, PCOS, or unexplained infertility.

7. Migraine headaches.

8. Diagnosis of chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. These diagnoses simply indicate your conventional doctor cannot pinpoint the cause of your fatigue or pain.

9. Inflammation, swelling, or pain in your joints such as fingers, knees, or hips.

10. Mood issues such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, and ADD.

Seems like super vague symptoms which still has me suspect.

Some people are allergic most are just following the fad. No idea why because if you don't have an allergy to it you're just making your life hard. It's not like gluten is unhealthy.

Some idiot sent something back because it had gluten while he was drinking a beer. alright man I don't believe you but whatever. Not gonna lose business over it or argue with someone who has no idea what he's talking about.

My boy was like alot of people who have Gluten allergies gain all their fat in their stomach because they cant digest the proteins in Gluten products or something. I was like ummmm. I havent seen any "science" behind the whole Gluten thing, most of the discussion I see come from Blogs and those can be biased as hell, like if you were to search anything about the benefits of Veganism health wise or stuff like that.

If you can't digest it you're gonna get a stomach ache I'd figure. That's basically what the allergy is. A couple of my friends really have it. One gets an upset stomach and the other gets it pushed out here pores like acne. They both still eat it too sometimes. It's not life or death like they make it seem. It's just putting up with some discomfort.

I don't think it makes you fat if you're allergic. At least I've never heard of that.

All gluten is is a wheat protein. It's the stuff that holds dough together.

My daughter eats gluten and she breaks out in hives, and her eczema becomes unbearable.
I had already knew she was allergic and she snuck and ate a 1/2 of a loaf of bread. That had us back and forth to the hospital
for a month, and didnt fully leave her system for 3 months.
Its real thing bruh.. I can only speak for her tho.

This just seems so "new" to me if that makes sense. Like Growing up I never heard of people having these symptons. COuld be because it is "Rare" but it just seems as of late (last 5 yrs) is where I have started seeing "Gluten Free" everywhere. IDK maybe I never paid it attention. It just has me scratching my head when you ask someone about it they cant really tell you much besides "gluten is bad", but then you have a case like yours where you can see it is an actual real thing.

It's definitely real. It's just that 90% of people jumped on the bandwagon for no reason.

Looking at those symptoms..damn.

I need to do more research because..yeah.

lol @ they cant really tell you much besides "gluten is bad"

But I totally get where you coming from. I feel the same way too, that this gluten issue just showed up. I dont have any concrete answer's but from what I have both read and heard, it seems to be a combination of things. The way food is treated/ wheat is harvested is different. It is stripped of its nutrients, the nutrients in the soil its grown in isn't the same, you have your gmo factors as well, and we are growing unhealthier as a species. Things that didn't bother us before now do.

I also think that after further research, scientists may realized that it is a trigger to a bunch of different issues, after misdiagnosing symptoms. You know how one day they have this "finding" that the cause of x is z. Before that they have had some cases wrong saying the cause of x is y. This part is just my opinion tho.

I don't know exactly how it's diagnosed or what its symptoms are but I've had some experiences with people claiming to have gluten allergy.

I definitely think it's real based on my experiences with gluten allergy patients at the hospital I interned at. If I recall correctly the doctors said the sensitivity to gluten is very real and a symptom of some auto-immune disease.

There is nothing inherently wrong with gluten that I know of and going on a gluten-free diet when you're not sensitive/allergic to it is pointless.

It's definitely a real thing, as I know a person who legitimately has celiacs disease. However, what's crazy to me is that 15-20 years ago, I had never heard of the mass # of young folks out there today with allergies to peanuts and gluten. All in all, these allergies help keep the healthcare industry profiting, so there's probably something to it. *shrugs*

Sucks for people who have bad reactions to gluten. I remember reading about how athletes were tested by some specialists to determine what foods they didn't react well to and which foods were better for them.

I have some random allergy to some type of flour, never went to the doctor to find out exactly what though. I've had 3 really bad reactions in my life. One was so bad I was looking like will smith in hitch. My face was swollen like crazy and my airways were closing up.

I can def believe if its tied to a raise in GMO stuff. I dont have the scientific data that says GMO use has risen since the early 90s when i was a kid but it wouldnt surprise me. The thing with all this health stuff is really all you can do is go get tested for the allergies becauss reading stuff online much is it is very vague or things so generic you can make yourself think you may suffer from it.

Hell at this point it seems the safest stuff to eat would be a 80:20 ratio of plants/fruits to meat and cut out processed stuff.

Part of the reason these things are more common now is because of processed food ad less exposure to allergens etc.

The common phrase is that there's no asthma in Africa - because kids there are exposed to what causes it early.

With gluten sensitivity people who had low level symptoms could get away with it even 20 years ago because they ate a better diet with less processed flour etc - now people eat so much cheap convenience food that it triggers enough if a reaction that they look into it.

It's also true that avoiding gluten doesn't do anything for someone without the condition though. The only benefit would be eating a cleaner diet - but just swapping for GF everything is of no benefit.

That's what I figured too, if you're not allergic why are you out there seeking gluten free stuff? Marketing is a powerful thing

TRUE STORY:

I've worked in the food industry for 10+ years, i have people who comes to the restaurant who have "gluten allergy" and still eat wheat, rye, and barley product. I shake my head all the time when they order and makes it known they have allergy and i tell them that this food comes with it, and just proceed to oh thats fine. So i rarely believe people who have a gluten allergens. Now i understand that people do get sick but if its "diet" welps...

Had this coworker i just started in the company who supposed to have a gluten free allergen...we were having pizza and this dude was eating 2 or 3 slices and i was like dawg, dont you have a gluten free allergy, homie hit me with its alright, ill deal with it later.

So how many people actually have this? When I grew up in the 90's I never ever heard about this. Is it just because of the internet that stuff is miniscule (like less than 1% of the population) can become mainstream news...?

These grocery stores/manufacturers taking advantage of the gluten free trend. They starting to add the gluten free label to all kinds of stuff.

Coulda swore I seen gluten free paper towels and gluten free toilet bowl cleaner lol

I feel you man. Super annoying for us. It's very apparent when someone is just doing it for no reason. People with the allergy don't act entitled. People without the allergy want you to know they DO NOT EAT GLUTEN!!!

From what I've seen the research is conflicting. However, celiac disease is real.

People will jump all over fads like "gluten sensitivity" whether there is evidence for it or not. Just look at the whole movement against GMOs.

I think the GMO issues is because some feel the "science" simply isn't there yet to know long term impacts of them. While you have others who argue the "greater good" of feeding people globally, but even then all of the cases of hunger are not the same globally, while some nations may have actual famine, there are many who just lack the infrastructure to meet the needs of their nations
