Being out and proud is about to become a whole lot easier for thousands of LGBT high school students in Atlanta. "Pride School Atlanta," a first-of-its-kind K-12 private school offering students both education and a dedicated safe space, is slated to open in the southern capital in September 2016. The landmark institution is also aimed at LGBT teachers.

Though gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students are clearly the founders' main focus, Pride School's doors will be open to any student who believes they're not getting the support they need for "being different," Pride School founder Christian Zsilavetz told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Kids have full permission to be themselves—as well as educators. Where there's no wondering, 'Is this teacher going to be a person for me to be myself with?'" said Zsilavetz, a trans veteran teacher of nearly 25 years. "This is a place where they (students) can just open up and be the best person they can be." Tuition will be around $13,000, with financial assistance available for kids and parents who can't afford that fee.

The institution will also provide an incentive for LGBT students not to flee their communities for cities like New York. "If a student does need a place where they can be safe from bullying, from peers who want to harass or harm them, they're not going to have to travel tons of distance to do that," said Ross Murray, programs director, global and U.S. South, for gay rights group GLAAD. It joins other initiatives such as gender-neutral restrooms and India's new transgender modeling agency in proving that 2016's challenge to gender norms is about to progress far beyond just boys in skirts. Though, of course, that's important too.

I don't know if I'm for this due to how young they're going with it. Now if it was for high school students only, then sure.

I don't think this idea will be successful, given that people who regularly go through some form of persecution would want to seek acceptance/understanding rather than isolation/segregation. But who knows
*shrug*

Why is society pushin sexual preferance on children these days. These kids are worried about playing with toys and friends and eating snacks.

Kids need to worry about being kids, not about what an adult is forcing in brain.

Man i feel bad for my son when he starts going to school in 5 years.

If two parents are the same sex, hey man do ya thang, i can get jiggy to some ricky martin.

Gays been gayin for a while, it seems like its ok to come out now, but they dont need to force others to THINK that they are attracted to the same sex, especially the kids.

just actually read the article. so this open to all but caters to lgbts. So its like a hsbcu then.
they need to delete all them younger grades tho.

Nearly 9 in 10 LGBT students report experiencing harassment within the last school year, and three in 10 report missing a class because they felt unsafe, according to gay rights group Georgia Equality. The group was among other advocates who lobbied state lawmakers to create legislation to reduce bullying in schools.

After the bill was signed into law in 2010, the group investigated school district policies in Georgia to see which districts had LGBT-specific bullying-prevention policies. It found fewer than 30 percent did.

"Since then we have been working with individual school districts to enact LGBT-inclusive policies that protect all Georgia students," according to the group's website.

"I think right now what a lot of (LGBT) students face is separate but equal education in the public schools," he said. "Because if you can't go to the bathroom all day and you can't use the locker room and you're bullied in the classroom and the teachers aren't standing up for you, you don't have a full seat at the table."

I have no issue with the school, but how the hell do kids know they're gay in kindergarten?

Like the concept of gay/straight wasn't even something I had heard of at 5. And even if a kid that age has heard of it, I don't think they can fully grasp it.

13k per year is 'protecting students'?

the road to hell is paved with good intentions indeed

Can you even imagine? Being in like 5th or 6th grade. You are old enough to understand attraction, and know you are definitely attracted to the same sex.

Now you have to not only go to a parent and explain, which is a situation fraught with tension in and of itself, but then tell them you need 13k a year to switch schools to be more comfortable.

That's rough.

at the young age it's pretty much like the parents are "choosing" their kids sexuality

kids growing up around gay kids, confused to why they feel attracted to girls

Yea in 5th grade it'd be hard, but kindergarten? What happened to just playing doctor, figuring **** out on your own, and being exposed to the vicissitudes of life in order to actually learn and organically experience stuff, grow etc. These safe spaces are social ghettos in disguise :smh:

At the same time, it might actually have the opposite effect like kids that go to Catholic school only to drop out and renounce religion lol

I don't know about Kinderdarten, but when I was a teacher's aide for an elementary school in West Philly 11 years back, we could definetly spot the gay children...

...if a little boy is runnin' around with the girls all day and declaring that he's having "hot flashes", it was kinda cut and dry.

We actually had to protect him from other students a little bit...

...yeah, I'm weary of adults placing sexuality on kids too, but man, sometimes even Stevie Wonder can see the ****.

But because I'm human and a hypocrite, let me tell the truth: if my future son acted like that kid at such a young age, I still wouldn't send him to an LBGT school - you gon' have to learn how to handle and stick up for yourself in real society...

*kanye shrug*
