Debt Dodgers: Meet the Americans Who Moved to Europe and Went AWOL on Their Student Loans

This is why it irks me when people get themselves into debt studying a useless major. Call me petty but you gon study something you can't get a job with? Then complain why you're in debt.

My moms an accountant and you know how the housing market collapsed? She was saying student loans are next

That's because they've been conditioned to believe that going to some expensive private school will somehow improve their job prospect.

A big issue in this country is brands and branding. People want to project an image via these brands as if they are better than the next person because they own or were educated at said brand

It still blows my mind that so many people refuse to look at going to community colleges. Had 2 years of college paid off before I even went to a university. There have been so many of these crazy student loan debt stories out there and so much information online that there is no excuse for anyone with access to the internet to not understand the loan processes and how dangerous they can be.

Hopefully the internet will play a big role in the future to make post secondary school education affordable because a lot of things you can learn on the internet withouth steeping foot in a classroom

Being from a country where higher education is very cheap I really can't imagine what that's like and I think the US education tuitions are ridiculous.

I can go to Belgium's most prestigious university (also in the top 120 worldwide) for €890 a year. €470 a year on a partial scholarship and €105 a year on a full scholarship.

Education should be something that is affordable to as many people as possible.

Of course we have significantly higher taxes to support the low education and healthcare costs but I'm happy to contribute to that.

Jobs are constantly being shipped overseas, college tuition is soaring, and decent wages are disappearing. This issue is far greater than young adults lacking responsibility when taking out loans to go to universities. The middle class is diminishing while the people at the top are holding ridiculous amounts of money. At the end of the day, the government needs to take responsibility and protect the common people.

Que? How do you propose they do that?

Well yeah thats the basis for any loan. The longer you take to pay it off the more money the lender makes.

if i tried to skip out on my loans, they'd probably send someone after me or worse...

How much of this is due to people living above their means and not having any common sense?

Had a family member who was getting paid $27/hr who was getting slizzard, blowing trees, popping pills and smoking a pack of newport on a daily basis. Caught a public intoxication, and DUI charge within the same year and had to pay $5k on lawyers, fines and court costs.

Not too long after that, got committed to a psych ward 3 times within a 2.5 year span and missed almost a full year of work. Was still able to keep job, but got transferred to another city. Missed her boyfriend so she quit, moved back in with parents and had to start over with a $12/hr job at another company :smh:

Just saying this, cause I know most college students drink massive amounts of Alcohol despite not even being legally allowed to...where is all this money coming from?

And alot of people will stay jobless for 8-12 week stretches because they feel they are entitled to prestigious jobs. (I know dudes with plenty of misdemeanors and even felonies who are never out of work, so it's no excuse)

And please believe the banks make money betting on these students to not pay back their loans

It's a little known secret that banks don't really want you to pay them back and be off the hook. They will restructure, refinance and rescrew you so that you keep paying these tranches in some shape or form. In other words, banks thrive on financial irresponsibility.

tbh trade schools >>> colleges

Until robots replace those trades...unless the trade is servicing robot workers but that will be done by robots too
this is exactly the problem

thinking that trade school jobs are basic

I make a living as a union electrician. It's a skilled trade that requires knowledge and craftsmanship, ain't no robot taking my job. Contractors are always looking for ways to lower the price of production, but there's only so much you can do. Yes they will pre-fab certain things, but people still need to install them.

I build America, I light entire cities up.

I started my apprenticeship at $24.42 an hour, new apprentices are starting at $25 an hour. Worked over 2000 hours and I've already gotten a couple raises. I'm getting paid damn good money to get on the job experience and learn every aspect of electricity in the class. in 4 year or so when I graduate from my apprenticeship, I'll be a Journeyman Wireman making over $57 an hour, take home. Best part about it, I won't have a penny of student loans and I will be an exceptional worker with a skill set that will ALWAYS be in demand.

Unfortunately, this is true. You have people supporting all kinds of deals like NAFTA, and TPP that take away decent paying jobs here in the US. Everybody remember how Detroit was a thriving city? Look at it now, imagine if those jobs would have stayed there. It's so easy to make the middle class disappear, we're fighting each other  I laugh whenever I hear members of the middle class talk about trickle down economics being good. Hearing them say they think corporations shouldn't be taxed so much, bunch of poor republicans fighting for money that isn't there's and never will be.

In the 60's Labor Unions made up over 60% of the market share. Nowadays, it's about 12%. Labor unions promote good pay, good benefits, pension, and a safe and healthy workplace. **** all of this capitalistic BS. EVERYBODY should have the right to a higher education and healthcare.

I know I kind of went on a rant, I hope some of you read it. It's something that angers me. As I started typing it kind of kept on going.

To answer the OP, these students aren't doing anything that Apple and other huge corporations aren't already doing. So yes it's wrong, no I kind of can't blame them.

As cool as that sounds in theory it won't be effective. All things being equal between two candidates the one with the degree is gonna win out and while it's no longer a requirement, having a degree makes you more appealing than the guy who doesn't. Same as certifications do.

It's not a theory, it's an increasing trend.

I didn't see any data in there, interesting read though.

Unless I can see something tangible like "X firms/industry hiring of non college graduates rose by_____ percent" I can't really buy it. Having a degree is still widely seen as a base requirement for jobs, at least corporate America ones.
