I told that to my first grader when learning greater than/less than, and he came home and said his teacher told him that's not how he was supposed to remember it. That was the "old way" and he should only think of the arrow pointing to the lower number. That ish has been used for generations just fine, and little kids like animals so they remember it. Damn common core education...
