Movie was just shown at Sundance and there is a ton of buzz. The backstory of Nate Parker (producer) and what he had to do to get the film made was interesting. Here's some info, with the Wiki link following:

The Birth of a Nation is written, produced, and directed by Nate Parker, who also stars as Nat Turner. Parker learned about Turner from an African-American studies course at the University of Oklahoma. He began writing the screenplay for a Nat Turner film in 2009 and had a fellowship at a lab under the Sundance Institute. While he got writing feedback from filmmakers like James Mangold, he was told that a Nat Turner film could not be produced. The Hollywood Reporter said, "But what he heard instead were all the reasons a movie about Nat Turner wouldn't work: Movies with black leads don't play internationally; a period film with big fight scenes would be too expensive; it was too violent; it wouldn't work without a big box-office star leading it; Turner was too controversial — after all, he was responsible for the deaths of dozens of well-off white landowners."[3]

After Parker finished his acting role in Beyond the Lights in late 2013, he told his agents he would not continue acting until he had played Nat Turner in a film. He invested $100,000 of his money to hire a production designer and to pay for location scouting in Savannah, Georgia. He met with multiple financiers, and the first to invest in the film were retired basketball player Michael Finley (who invested in the film The Butler) and active basketball player Tony Parker. Nate Parker eventually brought together 11 groups of investors to finance 60 percent of the $10 million production budget, and producer Aaron L. Gilbert of Bron Studios joined to cover the remaining financing.[3]

In November 2014, development was underway, and Armie Hammer joined the cast.[7] By April 2015, Aja Naomi King and Gabrielle Union joined the cast.[8] In subsequent months, Penelope Ann Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, and Mark Boone Junior also joined the cast.[9] Filming took place in Georgia in May 2015 and lasted 27 days.[3]

Hot take alert....

So the only way to get Oscar buzz is to do movies about slaves or civil rights? :smh:
This has nothing to do with the Oscars though or did you read somewhere the Academy decided to nominate this movie after the deadline?

Stop being so thirsty to connect these topics man.

Nate Parker really wanted to make this movie just by reading the OP. He did it. It's apparently good and bigger studios are trying to get distribution rights.

Also no, that's not the only way to get Oscar buzz even though this movie does not have that.

Obviously I meant next year. And yes, it is getting Oscar buzz already. Guarantee it will be nominated next year. Especially with all the controversy this year.

never been too impressed with this director's work

hopefully the movie is actually good and doesnt just get by on it's subject material

Why cause its about Nat tuner it may happen to be a good movie? :rolleyes

Why can't people let this be great before they try and discredit it?

How am I trying to discredit it? I just said it's getting Oscar buzz. And it got a standing ovation at Sundance.

Just saying. This, Selma, 12 Years of Slave.

How about an astronaut, a screenwriter, or a computer science thief, or a guy getting plowed by bear for once? :smh:

Like I said /HotTake :smokin

Selma and 12 years a slave were exceptional movies though they deserved to be nominated. Nat turner is an important story and finally is getting the recognition. Also a young black producer and writer AND director AND star put it all together and the first thing YOU think of is the same ole hollywood ********?

Man you playing right into the devils hands bruh go somewhere with that

this is what I'm worried about, that's a lot to handle for someone directing a movie for the first time.

execution is key

Oh of course, but from the early reports and the fact FOX paid THAT much for it says something. Also dude clearly wanted to tell this story and worked his *** off to do it. I commend him for trying atleast

No unless this movie gets nominated later in the year it might not even get nominated at all.

Also yes, the Academy has a history of nominating black movies that deal with important times in our history but you can't pretend like Jamie Foxx aint get nominated and won for Ray and nominated for Collateral or Denzel or Halle.

End of the day if the movie is good and about an issue like that it'll get nominated. It's not the only one though.

You'd be better off naming these other great black movies not about those topics that you feel got snubbed or get no recognition.

for sure, gotta respect someone for going out and trying to tell a story they feel needs to be told and the ability to get funding to do it.
