Birth of a Nation sounds INSANE. vol. Nat Turner Slave Rebellion Movie (Teaser Trailer - p. 5)

I'm looking forward to it and will be sure to see it. Sounds great!!

The film hasn't even hit theaters and already we got naysayers and doubters speaking negativity on it already. Applaud the brotha for his hard work thus far and support it when it hits the screen.

Dont want to take nothing away from Parker and dull his moment. Excited to see this and happy how things worked out for him.

With that being said, if it is indeed phenomenal and the Oscar nominations come calling, that will be great.

But i think it will only be fair to acknowledge that this will be another case of a Black person having to play a slave or some prominent person in a period piece to be recognized.

i think what will be even more awesome is to see other black actors playing modern characters get nominated in the same year.... maybe that will happen

I agree with this and I think this is what some people on the first page felt.

Also in the same vein, why did Red Tails flop?

Red tails wasn't good. Those accents were some of the worst I've ever heard in a film . But we know WHY it flopped. Didn't have to do with the quality of the movie...it flopped because of the cast and topic. Very unfortunate.

Hopefully, this Nat Turner film delivers....and opens studios up to making more films with black leads. Pipe dream, but you start somewhere. If not, keep banging em in the head with quality movies and forced yourself in the door. Hopefully, this movie makes people uncomfortable.

But you see who made the film, somebody that was passionate about it, not some Hollywood hack ordered by an exec to have it made. If we want more movies like this, it will have to come from the actors that want it made.

Make sure yall s
How else would they portray slave masters? There were no good or nice slave masters.
Do you understand the oxymoron of a nice slave master?

We all just let it go hoping that he would see it

Consider me interested b/c of the back story of how he started filming from the jump :wow:. Gotta respect that and would love to see the finished footage.

There was forms of slavery but NOTHING was like the enslavement of African people in this country. It was a whole different world over here. It was some evil ****.

I think you need to reread what I said. I'm the one that was saying nice slave masters didn't exist.

I mean there were black slave owners during American slavery.

Then there's the practice of manumitting slaves.

All it really takes is to study this stuff if you want to know and determine for yourself something subjective like this.

It's not an oxymoron if you understand the entire history of slavery on this planet.
But we weren't talking about slavery's history on the entire planet. Stay on topic please.

With the type of slavery we are discussing, What would make someone a nice slave master?

I don't understand how anyone who owns people, and sells them for money or other slaves can be considered "nice".
What if they were working the system?

You guys are talking from an outside perspective. Put yourselves in a situation where slavery is legal, it's a business, you can not stop it, sure you can try to protest, lobby against it, not part take but it's still going to go on. You know these ppl are going to be sold regardless. If you buy them you can give them an education, treat em right, raise them, and eventually free them (depending on the state you can do this almost right away).

Those things actually did happen while slavery was legal. Obviously not by enough ppl. They weren't racists, they didn't believe these ppl were property. With that in mind, I'd leave up to ya subjective opinion if those ppl were worthy of the label nice.

Again, if the history of American slavery was seriously taught in schools yall wouldn't be so lost on the topic when something like this is brought up.

No. I definitely was. I was definitely on topic.

Perhaps you should re-read and see what you're calling an oxymoron isn't an oxymoron. I don't have to bring up examples of slavery among the Romans and Vikings if you want to keep this to American slavery.

Education man.

But someone has to CHOSE to partake in the ownership of a slave(s) correct? If I am wrong let me know

what about abolitionist then? Didn't they choose not to partake in slavery?
What about them? Abolitionist were "enlightened" white guys and educated black men, formerly slaves or came here free that were dedicated to abolishing slavery. Not all had money to buy slaves. When I bring up this notion I'm not just saying they bought slaves, treated them well and then sat on their ***** and didn't try to change things.

You do know some abolitionists were slave owners right? I'm not knocking them at all. I was just specifically talking about certain white slave masters and black slave masters that clearly a lot of ppl simply don't know about which simply stems from the idea of a nice slave master being brought up.

Yeah, so?

It really comes down to are you willing to engage in an unjust practice in order to do good cuz the good you're doing is what really matters to the living ppl whose lives are potentially on the line. Not just having a principle and then ignoring those ppl. Yall gotta read some more slave narratives.

I can put it to you in a scenario like this, lets say you were a slave, your slave master was your father. When you come of age you are freed and when your father/slave master dies he leaves the plantation and all the slaves to you to inherit (along with your siblings). Do you leave it to your siblings and enjoy your freedom or do you stay and become the new slave owner, make sure you take care of your fellow slaves and free them when you get the chance? That's the choice you have. Keep in mind if you just cut them loose there's a good chance they'll not be able to make it on their own (low chance of that in the south) and those freed slaves will end up sharecropping on another plantation or worse, they'll get recaptured and resold in to slavery or just outright killed for w/e reason some murderous racist decides on a given day.

You can't treat somebody with respect while you're owning them. That don't even make sense. :smh:

I'm sure there were some slave masters that weren't into the beatings and rapings but nah... You still owned people based on their race and contributed to it. Don't own people period. They were all in the same boat.
Not Really. Some slave masters bought people and gave them freedom.

Sorry guys there is no lesser evil when it comes to owning humans. Devils are devils & no matter the "lesser treatment" you still or practicing the same devil **** Miss me with this between the line BS

This mentally that slave owners are nothing but Devils is exactly my main concern for this movie

Tf should they be betrayed as? Heroes of the world? Like dude is really in here caping for slaves owners. I'm sorry if your ancestors were devils but it is what it is. They were subhumans & deserved extermination. Get over it.
