So, I have "runners knee" and I need advice on what shoe is perfect for protecting knees and such?

So, right now i'm in the police academy and we do PT every day, which means we run everyday. I was running in the Ultra Boost. While they are comfy to run in, they don't have enough stability for my size (6'4'' 229 pounds). After realizing that I need stability, I was running in my Air max 2013's, but they tend to put a lot of pressure on my knees, which causes pain afterwards. That was when I realized I have "runners knee". When I walk up stairs and so forth, my knees tend to hurt and at times when I'm driving, my knees be in pain as well. SO, i'm looking for a good shoe that is very comfortable, but very durable with stability that won't put pressure on my knees. I'm starting to realize that Nike Air max's are horrible shoes for pound for pound running. My PT instructor was telling me about this brand called Brooks, which he said, that they are the best running shoes you could get. Anyone have any idea's or advice that they can give me on a shoe that is good for protecting my knees while running? Thanks in advance.

How far do you run? 230 lbs is not conducive to running. Could be the shoes, could be the form, but that's a lot of force on the knees regardless. Running is a thin person's sport.

I would go to a running specialty store and have them view your form and gait. They will give you the best shoe. Tell them about your knee issue. Good luck.

Go to a running store and have them fit you for shoes. Road runners sports has 90 day return policy with fitted shoes. If your knee is still acting up you can look into a tens unit.

@FDUB  ...I'd say work on your form, it's almost always bad form which causes joint pain. But also foot wear is important, cheap footwear can cause serious damage the older you get. For me, I own Free Runs, Dual Fusions, and Lunarglides. They have really good heel-to-toe offsets, and the material is highly shock absorbent.

I've seen those running specialty stores mentioned numerous times on NT...

On average, what am I looking at for them to give me a diagnosis?

I ran in New Balance 993s while I was in the police academy. I had knee pain prior and didn't have any problems during PT. I heard good things about the Brooks Beast for heavier runners.

Yeah, I'm going to go to a runner specific store that see how I run, so they can give me good suggestions. I'm going to check out some brooks. I heard they're expensive, but well worth it.

Shoes won't fix your knee. Lose some weight and see a doctor. Trust me, I'm a big guy with bad knees. But as far as shoes I suggest New Balance 990.

man i stopped running because of runner's knee. it became too painful.

last time i ran was a half marathon about a year and a half ago

my knee hurt so much after that i've never ran again.

I've got the same problem. You could try the knee band as above , i do some single leg exercises which have helped. Ice is going to be your best friend , and stay away completely from running outside , it is the worst for your knees in general.

Agree with the hip mobility advice. I started doing hip flexor stretches in the mornings for about 2 months and haven't had any knee pain from squats/ lunges since. I need to stop being cheap and finally cop a foam roller though

Strengthen the muscles around your kneed. I have a similar issue, only when I'm hooping or walking up stairs though. I noticed once I started working on my legs more, the pain was almost non-existent, when I stopped, pain came back.

The exact issue you're having was plaguing an author a few years ago
The book that he wrote tryng to solve it is called Born to Run

In case you're really not a reader , here's a summary. Watch some videos that discuss proper running form, just make sure thdy keep it simple. I like this one guy on YouTube called "Zen running" or something like that. He says to watch how a kid runs dwn the street, and model yourself after that. Basically stay loose and
Your knee hurts bc of the impact

I'm the same about 6'3" and 225. I started running in 2012 and went to a Fleet Feet where they watched me walk and jog. They recommended neutral shoes for me versus stability (which usually have extra padding and a grey box on the inner bottom of the shoe).

While obviously I love Nike they aren't great running shoes at least to me. In fact most of the serious runners I know agree.

You need heavy cushioning to help with the knees. I swear by Asics Nimbus for neutral. If you need stability Asics Kayano is the way to go. I've worn Brooks Glycerin but they aren't as good to me. Hoka one one makes some really cushioned shoes but they look funny and don't come in widths for me.

Good luck!
