SPIELBERG DOESNT BELIEVE IN #OSCARSSOWHITE

Onus is partially on us too to stop settling for making "oh dear lord mama" type flicks and ****. Relative unknowns with small budgets get recognition all the time.

not really... there are so many dumb/offensive white movies that come out

hollywood can have dumb black movies and still cast black people in oscar level movies

but it is true that these days with how easy it is to make a movie, a black director can create a great indie movie without the need of much studio backing

While he is technically correct, I can see how it could come off wrong.

It's essentially saying that there are no black entertainers currently good enough to win these awards so we need to seek higher level black talent if we want to see more diversity in nominations and awards.

It was my understanding that the issue was current black entertainers being passed over for lesser performances by whites, or not being fairly represented in the process. I'm not really into movies or the academy like that so I really don't know if thats the case. Maybe the black actors and actresses in hollywood just aren't that good. Somehow I kinda doubt that conclusion was drawn in a fair and balanced manner.

And I really think he was trolling talking about straight outta compton. Like, if thats the only majority black, major motion picture this year then we see why there are no nominations. Black folks are rarely gonna be widely accepted as the adored hero in white movies.

WHAT did he say wrong exactly?

He said it isn't the Oscars that is the issue, it is the hiring of talent for movie roles that is the issue.

What did he say wrong?

Op just coming through with the fake outrage. People put way too much stock into these award shows. Steve is right... It starts with the writers and the directors and the casting and the studios.

the cast of Gods of Egypt take a break on set
I literally could not believe this horse**** when I saw the trailer.

 :smh: Thread title is so OFF. C'mon son.

"I do think that what the Academy is doing, in a proactive way, to open up the membership to diversity, I think that's very, very important," Spielberg said. "But it's not just the Academy, and I think we have to stop pointing fingers and blaming the Academy." Spielberg suggested its larger than just the awards show—"it's the people that hire, it's the people at the main gate of studios." The director was adamant that diversity "starts on the page," and that the industry in general should be "more proactive in getting out there and just seeking talent."
THIS

That is what's wrong with Hollywood but for some odd reason even the ppl complaining about OscarsSoWhite seem to be ignoring that and focusing their anger on the Academy as if they can change Hollywood working backwards. I almost think they're scared to admit that's the real problem cuz they know they can't tackle such a huge issue when it comes to racism and race relations in show business.

It's actually #HollywoodSoWhite but if called how it is ppl would have to be angry all year long every year instead of a convenient 2 months from announcement of the nominees to the day of the awards :smh:

I honestly don't see anything wrong with this. I respect his opinion. He acknowledges that the accademy isn't perfect and needs to change, just mentions that there needs to be more diversity in Hollywood overall.

At least that's what I took from it.
Yeah I just think his example of Lupita from 12 years a slave as proof is just wrong
They ONLY ever acknowledge us in those type of roles
This is not true.

It just so happens that roles like this demand actual great acting. Black actors aren't given the other roles to be in love stories, thrillers, mysteries, etc. or other genre specific movies that would get nominated. When they do it's heavily tied to racism, slavery, etc.

the kid in beasts of no nation's performance >>>>>>>>>>>> leo

Its not even close. I want leo to win but i want him to win in a role that he deserves to win in.
That's rarely how it works for the Oscars
