I'm a huge hip hop fan and a friend and I have a debate going on, I hope you guys can chime in on. He believes that Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole are Pop Stars. I don't think they are, because I don't think they make pop music. What say the NTers? Are they pop stars?

Chime in

Pop music is "popular culture" music which is accepted by mainstream America. If the song blurs the line of radio stations and music channels then it's "pop music", whether you're a hardcore rapper like Jay-Z or country singer like Taylor Swift.

J Cole is a pop star IMO, Kendrick not so much. Cole is more radio friendly than Kendrick, especially with TPAB

I don't see them as pop stars cause they don't make pop music.  Pop music is a genre and they don't pander to that audience.  They make Rap music and they have some crossover appeal.

Theyre rappers that have crossover hits & can crossover into pop. They are not pop stars.

Agree with both of these statements

"Pop" genre is Taylor Swift, Arianna, Bieber, Lavato, Derulo, etc

From what i understand
A pop artist is an artist who can do a commercial for soda pop.

Taylor swift
Beyonce
Etc.

youll never see gucci mane in a sprite commercial

I bet by the end of this year Future and/or Wop will be in a Sprite commercial making subtle/not so subtle references to pouring up.

pop music is derived from the term pop-ular culture, so yes drake is pop j.cole is pop anybody you hear on your local hip hop station is pop

Future is a pop star now....hes hosting snl this month or next

If they can be in a coke/pepsi commercial

Theyre a pop star.
Kanye is an odd exception to that rule but thats another discussion

Btw i dont think "pop star" is a negative term.
If u keep grinding and becoming successful youre eventually gonna reach a certain level.

Pop Music as whole today is considered a genre of sorts.  A certain style, technique, sound.  Not just music that is popular.  When J. Cole, or Kendrick, or *insert rapper* drops an album, its a rap/hip-hop album, not really a Pop album.  They may have crossover success. Drake being the largest one, but generally speaking his albums are labeled hip-hop and he's labeled a rapper.

Also to say they are Pop STARS makes it seem like they are dominating the pop industry.

Pop music is a genre.  There are artists that make pop music you've never heard of and there are hip hop, or rock or country or whatever artist that make music that is popular

Pretty much any genre could fit underneath the Pop umbrella. Whether its hip-hop, country, rock, whatever. Technically any artist that gets steady radio and video spins can be subcategorized as a Pop artist.
