OG Nike Air Jordan III Retro True Blue BLACK FRIDAY '16

It may be just me, but I always thought of this colorway as a nod to the 1988 Olympics. Red, white and blue wasnt a common colorway back then and with the rising popularity of the Air Jordan, they probably wanted a colorway to capitalize on the Olympic hype. Just like Olympic 7s were created to celebrate the 1992 Olympics.

when did the 3s release early '88 or in the Fall of 88? If i'm right, I dont think any NBA players were on that team.

I mean Seoul '88 didnt start till late Sept that year so maybe the True Blues release around Spring/Summer '88. Might be wrong

Black and white cements were for all-star for sure.

I wanna say the true blues were late summer, and fire reds were early fall, but I'm not 100%.

Not sure about the true blues as they were never worn by MJ on NBA court right? (Same with the military blues 4, grapes 5 or maroons 6)
A far as I remember from footages MJ wore the white cements during the 1988 slam dunk contest and the 2nd half of the season 1987/1988. Black cements only worn in the ASG 1988 right?
Firereds 3 in the 1st half of the season 1988/1989 before switching to the 4s during ASG.
This trend of switching models during the ASG of a season was kept until the season 1992/1993.
After that MJ would usually wear one model for a whole season, though he debuted the AJ 11 and 14 early in the post seasons.

I think back then they were still using non pro athletes for the basketball games. I believe the first Summer Olympics using Pros was 1992

Yup, 1988 was the last Olympics that the U.S. used all-amateur players. They all rocked Converse.

more pics

looks pretty good
These pics are strange. Left pair looks so fu and wrong. Right pair EP print is thinner, back is centered, height is taller and NA not drooping. I would take it. Is that what these pics are trying to show? Cheap fakes versus b grades?

These should be called the navy blues. That shade of blue is off. Def is not true blue.
Side note: i wonder why only true blues get the extra elephant print on the side panels. Bc, wc, and fr i think would look dope with that too

I looked it up and while most players were still in college then, a few were about to go into the NBA that fall but played that summer, such as Jeff Grayers and Hersey Hawkind. David Robinson was on that team too but didnt enter the league until the next year. Mitch Richmond was on the team as well

And im still convinced that Nike created these for the Olympics. More specifically to celebrate the games and for the average person to wear, since they were a basketball shoe with a lifestyle appeal. If i remember correctly, a lot of people back then bought Jordans but didn't wear them on the court because they were so expensive at the time and people didnt want to mess them up. Jordans back then always had one out of the ordinary colorway per model for the person who didnt want to wear Bulls colors and they were usually dictated by fashion trends at the time. With the Olympics happening that year, I know a lot of companies put out Olympic apparel to celebrate those games and people wanted a shoe that could match the apparel. Let's also not forget in 1988, the Cold War was still going on so patriotism was much higher than usual. Hence people wanting to wear Red, White and Blue to show their national pride. I'm actually surprised Jordan Brand didnt release these in the summer, I felt that they would have sold much better and that they should have chosen something else as the Black Friday shoe this year.
