OG Jordan XVIII Lows (new condition, 2003 release) safe to play in?

I've located a pair of NEW OG Jordan XVIII Lows (2003 product) in new condition and am hesitant to purchase because of some hot and cold comments about them. My reasoning is that I want to wear them to ball in, and I know that shoes at that age are a risk. I know the soles are sewn on, but does anyone have experience, advice on this? Any help appreciated!
