Is it time to end mandatory minimum sentences? Plenty of lawmakers think so.

You guys want to make fun of Combo gd's example. but he raises a salient point...

what are we doing this for if we aren't in the business of rehabilitation?

Like you don't think 10-15 years is enough of a deterrent for armed robbery? Any longer than that then whats the point? he didn't kill anyone.

Do you think if while he was im prison, and he got some type of training for a job, he would get out and still commit armed robbery? really.

If you're going to put someone away for 41 years you might as well execute them.

Excellent post.

A bit busy right now but this thread definitely piques my interest as I've spoken about the prison industrial complex at length previously on NT.

Always been a proponent of rehabilitation over incarceration. Current system only serves to foster recidivism. The fact that there are more prisons in this country than public colleges is appalling and a sad commentary on the state of corrections in this country.

Will expound later.

Its easy for all of you to say the "MASS INCARCERATION IS BAD" when it comes to easy questions. :rolleyes

but what about the hard questions, the questions in the grey area?

When people do something that is unquestionably bad how do we as a society respond to that?

thats also a question we have to answer when we consider the problem of mass incarceration.

He did it twice tho man. ARMED. I'm sorry man but idc. I believe in 2nd chances and rehabilitation but I ain't tryna hear it in his case

He's a threat to society.

so execute him.

but 41 years is a cop out. imo

Obviosuly he has to go to jail. but I don't understand the point of 41 years.

This boils down what should the priority of prisons be. how should we order these?;

Deterent
Rehabilitation
Punishment
Societal threat

Imo punishment is last should be last on the list.

You know, I wasn't with you at first but as you've gone on I've started to reevaluate my stance.

I know laws are different in each state but a very similar case occurred to my friend years ago. He was caught with possession with intent for sale (I think that's different from "trafficking") and was caught with a firearm that was not registered to him. He got caught once and was arrested but got bailed out the next morning. Ended up with a drug charge felony but nothing for the gun.

The officer who confiscated it said it's legal to own a gun but my friend was doing it wrong because it was a stolen gun that was unreported which was bought by somebody in the 80s. He was real glad there were no heads associated to the gun.

What's the point of this post? You already know where the majority of NT stands on this issue. It will devolve into a race thread with the usual suspects. So pointless.
What? The point was to show how unfair mandatory minimum sentences are in some cases and there has to be less lazy laws in regards to punishment. I don't know how you somehow insinuated that this will turn into a racial argument, but whatever...

41 yrs is crazy but I guess you gotta look at the what ifs. So many times we see he was just using the gun to scare them then someone ends up dead.

yeah combo gd's friend had it coming....

but those drug trafficking sentences don't make sense compared to crimes like manslaughter, kipnapping, and even using an atomic weapon

This doesn't really answer your question but using the example in the video

Girl gets with a drug dealer who has drugs in the house where he is murdered and they charge her with conspiracy to traffic.

Why not charge her with possession or something else? If she had a top lawyer im sure they would have figured out a way to get a lesser charge because she was "half way innocent".
