Is it bad I don't care to listen to 97% of the hip hop out there today?

Growing up to west coast legends/UGK/tribe called quest, etc, I have considered hip hop to be a huge and really enjoyable piece of myself.  Since the early 90's, I've kept up with pretty much every trend, clique, region to put the hottest MCs out.  I don't know if its just myself outgrowing some of the mainstream stuff that doesn't apply to myself anymore, but outside of Kendrick/J Cole/Pusha T, I feel like I've taken a bow from the rap game (similar to Jordans, retro Nike, etc).  It seems that we're in another ringtone era, where its nothing but "here today, gone tomorrow" rappers.  I sure hope Desiigner doesn't think he has a legit chance at a career!  On twitter, I see there's a Yung Thug "Jr" coming out of New Orleans.  How's OT Genesis career holding up after Coco??  Bish u guessed it?  Maybe it's just the TYPE of rappers out these days..  Do you actually like keeping up with the Trap mixtape blogs?  Maybe I'm missing out on something.  I feel like rap really took a nosedive for me in 07-08 when Wayne went strictly Autotune and put out Lollipop as his big C3 single.  After that, we didn't really have any movements, cliques, etc.  And even outside of trap, I just can't get excited for the latest offerings from NY cats like French Montana.  Is anyone else in the same boat??  Am I missing out on good stuff by avoiding what I feel is mainstream garbage??  Listening to DJ Quik in the whip this past week, I have no reason to want to keep up with what's new, with exception of some stuff I listed above.  Maybe this is a good time to explore into stuff like classic rock, jazz, .... etc.

Thoughts?

im on the same boat as you slapping that ganxsta/mobb 90s ****. Idk, it's as if i wanted music to evolve more and bring more meaning/social/organized sound... not gon lie though, some of this new turn up stuff be lit.

Hip hop today has gotten too effeminate. Biggest punchline is taking someone's girl. Cornballs :smh:

Music today lacks substance....at least what's being pushed. Other than "new" cats Cole, Kendrick, Krit, and a few others, and the OG vets, there's really no lyrcisim and it's all about takin somebody's girl, what kinda drugs they sell/use, how them or their homies keep a tool and will kill you, or how many *******/money they have. I don't really care about that.

I definitely feel you. I'm only 29 and I can't dig most of the stuff that is popping right now. I meas with Kendrick, Cole, Tyler, Earl, Lupe. Those kinda cats. Honestly, I'm an emcee/producer myself and I've been lyrically compared to Kendrick and Lupe. and my main focus is a non- mainstream sound and substantial lyricism. But all I see dudes typing up is " not everyone gonna rap like Lupe..." bit. Its not like I'm looking for another Lupe, just a substantial emcee with originality and delivery. Can't say I've ever heard a full song from future and cats like that. Usually gotta skip the songs cuz they don't do anything for me. I'm not gonna hate, those dudes do their thing pretty well, but I just wish the music had more meaning. Like where are the rest of the poets at

I barely check for anything these days. Haven't heard the latest KRIT or Gibbs and only heard the new K.Dot once.

not at all

I'm on a break from new rap, not even joking

i got red and meth playing right now

i been doing 90s and early 2000s HEAVY as of late

i listen to new rap but its not that same at all bro

I'm born in 1985 if it matters

It's not bad, a lot of this music that's out now is terrible and very forgettable. Can't say I listen to much any more, I just stick to podcast nowadays.

Most of my time in the car is now with podcasts, helps pass the time faster than music

I been like this for 10 years, not checking for anyone new, no radio, nothing. Took forever for me to give Cole and kendrick a chance

Contemporary rap is awful.

Kendrick Lamar is iiiiite to me & he's gettin slobbed...em i missing something or is da bar

So low that good rappers are now gods in this

Talentless void.

Da only NEW NY rapper thats good is David East & he's basically a Vado 2.0..

I feel like EVERY year this kinda thread is made. Like just get over it yall. Listen to what you like, ignore the nonsense & keep it moving. This complaining dont mean ish if you aint doing anything yourself to fix it...

Hip-Hop is getting or already is bad because of no gatekeepers keeping the crap out.

THIS & everything mostly sounds the same on the radio so up & coming artist making music that can get them easy radio play.....This NEW TRAP ERA is just down right awful like I don't understand what these labels are seeing in dude like CHIEF KEEF, THE MIGOS, FUTURE, FRENCH MONTANA, RICH HOMIE, FETTY WOP etc....It's not even a substance issue with me it's just these dudes can't rap to save they're lives we need more balance....

This. Grumpy old men.

Ehhhhh, I only feel like that when i turn on the radio, which is rarely. I have 15k+ songs on my laptop and 5k+ on my iPod, so I'm good. I don't even think it's that there are so many trash/mediocre rappers, i think it's just that with social media, it's made them more accessible and constantly able to be heard even if you don't want to hear them.

Na its easy to avoid artists you dont like imo. Like i despise Drake but dude is prob the most popular in the genre & i very rarely ever hear or see stuff relating to him throughout the day lol

I can't listen to the radio. I hate drake and Nicki and that's all they ******* play.

This. I'm 28, I have a fond memory of 90's and early 00's rap, and how anyone can say rap today is awful blows my mind. There are so many great rappers out there making music with substance. Just not what the media and radio push.

2015 was a really good year for hip hop actually.

I didn't know how messed up I was until a couple months ago. I let one of my co workers see my music library on my phone. Son literally said to me "where the gucci and future mane?" Why you got more than 10 2Pac songs :\

The music evolved for better or worse. It happened to rock and r&b it is what it is but I'm not about to go knocking these new guys for what they aren't. Take them for what they are. The old heads think if a song isn't super lyrical it's trash but a song that's properly structured/recorded/mixed/engineered and sounds amazing sonically >>>> lyrics. Those traditional notions of lyricism are passé and restrictive b
