Rest in Peace Phife Dawg

Didn't know who he was really but RIP. I thought Kanye West was a member of Tribe Called Quest. The first time I heard his name was on a Drake song. I'll go listen to some Tribe Called Quest on Apple Music and see how it goes.

Not trying to be funny, but how old are you?

One positive to come out of this is that all the tributes to Phife and respect/admiration he's being shown on line and elsewhere is really beautiful. I'm glad to know that so many people appreciated him as much as I did, as I'm sure his family and friends are.

Wow, you must be really young if the first time you heard his name was on a Drake song AND if you thought Kanye was part of the tribe LMAO. No hate though.

Kind of up there in terms of hip hop. I knew who q tip was but didn't do research. Back when that era was hot I was purely on screw tapes and Texas rap. Maybe some Lousiana but all the good hip hop flew over my head.

In all honesty I just started jamming nas around the same time I jammed Kendrick.

I was at the studio with an artist I work with Named George Young and he really put my on the laid back non aggressive hip hop. I didn't even know existed.

Oh no doubt...all good. I'm old and born and raised in the Bay and didn't really get into East Coast hiphop until i was in high school. I had a Public Enemy tape from back in the day, etc but 90% of my albums, tapes, etc were from the West.

Another positive that SHOULD come out of this is if these artists paying respect kind of help his family out. I know they don't have to, and I wouldn't lose respect for them if they didn't, but it would be refreshing to see some artists, especially those who have been influenced by ATCQ reach out to his wife and maybe see if there is anything they can do to help. But yeah, the outpouring of respect is pretty cool, this group was influential and for us older guys they were a part of my childhood, I remember watching "Yo, Mtv Raps" when it would come on once in the morning and the same episode would air at night and seeing these cats on there and thinking these guys are freaking insanely awesome, and to this day I can't hear their music without thinking back to when I was a youngin hogging the tv twice a day on Saturdays. Then when they dropped the remix to "Bonita Applebum" with Betweeb the Sheets sample, forget about it.

Maaaaaaan......

Was listening to some Tribe on a road trip with my wife this past weekend and we were both rapping every single word. Phife was literally a part of our youth--so much so that two damn near 40-year olds still know the lyrics word for word some 20+ years later.

It's crazy when you grow up with the music of someone and it makes them feel like family. There are only a few groups and artists that I can say that about, but Phife and ATCQ definitely fit that bill. Sad to see him gone so young. Rest in Peace, Malik.

Shoutout to your wife for knowing the lyrics lol but it's def sad man, dude been sick for a minute i think

rest in peace to the five footer.

RIP Phife .. [emoji]128543[/emoji]

Yeah, I'm still emotional, but been listing to a lot of stuff over the last couple days and I can confidently say, IMO, that Low End Theory is the best hip-hop album ever.

RIP Phife

The most interesting thing I've noticed over the past couple of days was how humble Phife was. He wasn't the typical rapper.

He talked and acted like a normal person and he was a fan of rap, and not like he was a member of arguably the best rap group. He gave credit and admired peers and also those who came after him.

Absolutely, this. Heard several interviews with Phife where he would recite lyrics from other people's verses/songs and say how dope they were, just like a regular fan. One thing I particularly enjoyed was hearing Phife talk about the original Scenario and how they all knew Busta was going to blow up after they heard his verse and that it had to go last because nobody else wanted to follow it. Was very funny and genuine.

I listened to B,R,&L and I think if it didn't come behind Marauders, it would have gotten more of the following it deserved.
