A Chicago man's Facebook video appeared to capture the moment he was shot by an assailant on the street.

The video, which surfaced on social media Thursday, showed an unidentified man standing in front of a convenience store talking to his followers before a barrage of gunfire.

The man in a White Sox cap said in his video that the owners of the store had to open it up because he needed "somewhere to duck and hide for cover."

In the seconds before the shots ring out he pans, to his surroundings before gazing down the street.

The phone then drops to the ground, showing a chilling juxtaposition of a clear blue sky and the assailant, who stands over the device and fires at least 16 shots.

After a brief moment of silence, a male voice is heard saying that he will take the victim to the hospital, and a woman begins wailing.

The video's authenticity or date could not be immediately confirmed.

A Chicago Police spokesman said he could not comment directly on the video, but told the Daily News that a 31-year-old man had been shot at the same intersection at 4:48 p.m. on Thursday.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was in critical condition at a local hospital as of 9 p.m. local time.

His assailant is believed to have approached on foot before fleeing in a car.

A law enforcement source told the News that the victim is a documented gang member.

Police statistics said that as of Wednesday morning there had been 727 people shot and 135 homicides so far this year in the city of Chicago.

However, the Chicago Tribune reported at 9 p.m. that nine more people had been shot during the course of the day, including a 23-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, who were both killed.

The incident is the latest in the city's most violent start to a year since 1999.

Earlier this week a young woman named Camiella Williams, 28, told The Trace that she has lost 23 loved ones to shootings, and is now an anti-gun violence advocate.

As the story was being edited another one of her friends, 27-year-old Cordero Mosley, was shot six times and died.

In a nutshell

- Gentrification
- Redlining
- Poor education
- Lack of opportunities
- Inept local government, police...

I'm not from Chicago, but anytime you see these things happen again and again in a city, it's the same things.

Crazy, the video is actually real.

Someone stood on the phone so they could take it on the low.

One could argue that its all the things that SneakerHeathen said but...
Absolutely none of those things means that the young black men of Chicago HAVE to go around shooting each other.

The REAL problem is a culture of ignorance.
Those kids think that it is ok to live life as savages and they 1. Dont know any better, 2. Dont care to know any better.

Until the community stands together and condemns these actions they will continue to happen.

And im not talking about holding rallies and marching and social media campaigns.
Im talking about Black Panther, militia style, "We dont allow that in our neighborhood", fight back with force, by any means necessary type of stand together.

Because the only reason these fools think they can run around killing people is because people are too afraid to do anything about it, because the kids got all the guns.

Fight back with force?

A bunch of single moms gonna come outside and go to war with their own children?

^ The guy thinks the issue is strictly singular.

If I took away your surrounding, your income, your health, your education and put you in the gutter. The last thing that would be of concern to you is your culture and how it permeates ignorance.

Give those people the same benefit you have and the chance of them being civil, culturally aware, educated and healthy is on par with yours. Exposure is everything.

He's right. They're organized militias that are willing and ready to fight against what they perceive as unjust government policies/practices.

It may take a similar unconventional approach to deal with violence of this magnitude. The government surely don't give a damn about young African Americans killing each other. Let's just let the violence play out, and lock these animals up. Similar to the Herion epidemic that we're seeing now, this is not a national crisis unless it hits "their America", now it's time to rethink the way we approach drugs in this country.

Same philosophy applies. Although it was a dumb movie, Chiraq had a point, it will take an outside-the-box approach to deal with this violence.

You're being defensive for no reason. Dude never said that wasn't the case. End of the day, they're still ignorant. Unless you got some spare billions in your account, we aren't going to be able to turn Chicago ghettos into Beverley Hills.

damn man...r.i.p.

those couple of seconds where the shooter is on camera gave me the chills...i always wonder whats going on in the mind of a shooter while they are doing the shooting...crazy stuff...

Man you can only blame the government so much. These kids are just outta control. They're so worried about "lacking".

"Just last year Chicago had over 600 caskets/ man killing some wack shh" -Ye

Sad sad situation man..damn..

I lived in Chicago one year my Freshman year in high school 1998-1999 school year. It wasn't as bad as it is now, but it was definitely parts of town I knew not to go. Its a sad situation all around and I don't have the answers. My grandmother still lives there, but none of my family plan on moving back **** that.

No he isn't.

You want a community composed largely of single mothers to engage their own children in warfare?

Say that out loud and tell me it makes a sense.

Some of you dudes need to learn when to just sit one out just spouting out stupid ****.

Yet, you disregard everything else I wrote. At the core of my message is an unconventional approach to dealing with this violence. But I'll let you have your moment.

I think this is the hardest thing to explain to people. They think they've struggled, they think they've had a hard life... Pales in comparison to the environment those kids are being brought up in devoid of any resources and investment whatsoever.

Everything SneakerHeathen said was A1.. Absolutely all those things will create an environment in which crime festers and thrives.

Invest in their education, provide them with a positive job outlook and further opportunities, and low and behold, they become the model citizens everyone wishes they were.

That's crazy

In for the sheltered judgements on these kids who didn't have the same opportunities and exposure to different things like you did

Don't know what the solution is but this was something purposely put into our youth over decades and decades so that the result would be the current point we're at so it's gonna take more than a few months, years and hashtags to stop

Some of you really need to go look at the murder rates for Chicago over the past 40 years.

Chicago has always been bad. It just became a talking point and sensationalized in the media and by Republicans. In fact it's a lot better than it was 20 or 30 years ago.
