I'll chop this down into a few categories

Relentlessly Reliable

- Ford Panther Platform (Crown Vic, Town Car, Grand Marquis)

- Toyota Corolla (Avoid 98-02 models, They eat oil like no other. Look for a 5 speed Manual or 4 speed Auto w/ OD. A lot of these are 3 speed autos, and they're terrible on the highway and only add to oil consumption issues)

- Honda Civic

-Toyota Camry

-Honda Accord (Look for manuals. These things eat transmissions, especially the 6cyls)

Trucks

- GM K series (Silverado/Sierra)

- Toyota Tacoma

- Ford Ranger

SUVs

- Toyota 4 Runner

- GM S10 (Blazer/Jimmy)

- Jeep XJ

Vans

- Honda Odyssey (watch for transmissions)

- Toyota Sienna

- Toyota Previa (My favorite lol)

- Chevy Astro/GMC Safari

- Chevy G20/GMC Vandura (Reliable as hell but MPGs will be atrocious)

Power Per Dollar

- 93-96 LT1 F-Body (Firebird/Camaro)

- 86-93 Foxbody Mustang (Fuel injection was introduced for the 86 model year and makes things much easier)

- 94-04 SN-95 Mustang GT. 94 and 95 still used the 5.0L, which while slower stock is cheaper to modify than the 4.6 found in 96+

- Eclipse/Talon (Big power for little $ and AWD to boot)

- Mk3 Supra (beware of headgaskets, but a stud kit will resolve any future issues)

Fun Per Dollar

- NA or NB Miata

- AW11 Mr2 (Keep an eye out for SW20s, but they'll likely run over 5k)

- Pontiac Fiero

- Toyota Celica GT-S (Avoid Automatics. Most people don't realize that these are almost on par with the Integra Type-R, but cost thousands less)

- Acura RSX

- BMW E30/36

Image Per Dollar

I recommend against most of these, unless you have another car to drive. The cost of admission is low, but upkeep and/or restoration can get pricey

- Malaise era Muscle/Luxoboats (Smog era american cars made after 1974) These cars can be found dirt cheap and carry a lot of panache, but keep in mind when dealing with a 30-40 year old car, issues will arise)

- BMW E39/E46 (Costly cooling issues and electrical gremlins) These have aged remarkably well though.

- 94-96 LT1 Caprice. Mechanically the same as a Impala SS. Easy to clone. (Glass transmissions and prone to ignition issues)

- Fiero with a bodykit.... Had to do it

Great post! Think you could do one in the $10k thread?

1999 honda civic SI

honda-civic-si.jpg

(Higher mileage thou)

Nah, impossible to find an unmolested Si for 5 racks. They going for 8+ easy.

You could probably find one for 5K with a salvaged title (from being stolen and stripped) but it'll be missing a lot of OEM parts I bet. Probably won't even have the Si b16A2 it's supposed to have.

I could have probably thrown the s13 in there and def should have put them in the Under 10k thread along with the s14, but at under 5k you'll be hard pressed to find an s13 anymore that's not rotting away underneath from severe frame rust.

 Man, those things rust so badly I wouldn't be surprised if even most Cali cars were rotting away at the framerails.

What's average going rate for an s13 in California?
