"Smug Style American Liberalism" self critique Via VOX

Gamergate was a very interesting spectacle. Reasons why these folks have held their ground:

1.) As history has progressed, human beings have become hard-wired to not give a f--- about men. Check out the group bias in our closest animal relatives: male and female apes will do whatever it takes to protect female apes, but female apes will generally not lift a finger to protect the male apes. Most of the Gamergate crowd are people who society doesn't really care about (e.g. nerds, outsiders, etc.). Note also that their opponents are notorious for the the phenomenon that is "crying women > everything" and trotting out "poor victimized women" to win sympathy. The GG crowd was smart not to make any emotional arguments against them.

2.) GG's greatest defense is that it's been able to unite a very large, diverse group of folks under a common banner. Think of it as NT uniting over agreement of fine yambs. I'd also venture to say that the 4chan crowd is involved here and are notorious for being really intelligent trolls. Consider the fact that the GG crowd is very welcoming and open to everyone; personally, I've met a bunch of gamers who are very cool people and down to have fun. They're also very big proponents of logic, reason, and facts (which makes sense).

3.) GG has no centralized leader and is instead a shared set of ideas/goals. Therefore, it's difficult for the media or large groups to effectively target/undermine them. The GG crowd spans multiple platforms and communities around the world, primarily online. Decentralized structure has been a huge positive.

4.) GG uses their opponents' mistakes against them. Every time they go on an emotional rant, GG shows them how good they are and how bad, petty, corrupt, and asinine their opponents are. They strive to win hearts and minds and to be honest, GG folks know that their opponents are emotional-based creatures, who are easy to taunt and trick. Couple that with the infamous 4chan crowd and you have a losing battle against them.

5.) GG knows how to attack their opponents' infrastructure. One notable success is the boycott of Gawker advertisers. Gawker has reportedly been losing lots of cash and all of their advertising partners have, more or less, left. GG was able to identify the primary advertisers, quickly do damage, and cripple them.

6.) GG does not negotiate from a position of weakness. The men behind the curtain/media don't care about anything but profit. GG doesn't negotiate with their opponents because their opponents negotiate in bad faith. To drive it further, GG views their opponents as terrorists who are impinging on their land. Are you gonna willingly compromise with an opponent who has a long history of deceitful, disingenuous tactics?

This is such a one sided take on GG.

GG is at its core has been a harassment campaign against a couple women. It has a very dark ugly side, one you seem to be completely glossing over.

There is hardly anything I see commendable about that movement.

-Your first point is some red pill steez I can't get down with.

^ yeah idk what slighted was getting at. GG is a bunch of anonymous internet trolls who have been "wronged" by women, or can't even get women in he first place and they lash out against women who are the slightest bit outspoken. Zoe Quinn's Ex BF was salty that he got dumped and decided to lie about her and get his other loser anon buddies to harass her

They don't act from a point of weakness because they hide behind their computers, actually making them weak men who don't have the balls to say their gonna rape somebody to their face

This is some of the most ridiculous opinions masquerading as facts that I've read on this site in a very long time.

I think the problem with the article is it strains credulity to speak on the limits of the spread of the acceptance of progressive ideas in America and never really mention race.

Gamer gate stuff is classic tribalism.

I've known a bunch of gamers in my life, I spent a lot of time on video game forums when I was a kid, its a mostly male subculture, where men who often (but not always) maybe weren't as socially powerful in school or in life could feel that way within their sub culture.

Videos Games as an art form and specifically video criticism starts maturing, becoming more sophisticated. and that inevitably will result in the analysis/criticism of gender dynamics.

so you get a group of people who have identified as a gamer, suddenly like their subculture, their identity, the place they feel most socially important and powerful feels like it is being "invaded" and "attacked"

so they respond with hostility.

I'm not excusing the behavior but I get.

But I've met gamer gate people in real life, it doesn't take more than a 20 minute conversation to convince them that their anger of GG stuff is unreasonable. but its hard to do that on the internet, where triablism ruls the day.

Underestimating appeal :smh:

I mean, it is a very navel gazing article.

Follow da money when it comes to gamer gate...da video game industry has long surpassed da movie industry, that whole "social critique" is a shake down pure & simple.

I feel bad for gamers because games in general are a form of escapism, so for angry feminists to try to attempt to have a hostile take over of a industry that essentially caters to what their fans want for da most part cuz its fans vote with their $$$$.

Its a free market in video games, once you inject political correctness in there..nothing good can come of it. I seen da narrative gamer game opponents were tryin to portray.. White misogynist males.

I gotta hand it to gamers...they swatted that bug quick.

@ninjahood

Have you noticed how the Gamergate opponents primarily target white males? Why do you think this is so?

It seems like minorities are immune in this realm. You know, except when we're getting f---- other ways by the government/Hollywood/police/etc.

That's a huge wall of text. I started skimming through some of it and it really just seems like an attempt to show that liberals are just as bad as anyone else. I don't really see the value in this.

This reads like propaganda

Those Gamergate guys are the epitomy of losers in real life. They can't even appoint a leader because none of them have the balls to step up and be the face of something so wack

Agree with it in parts. I've noticed myself shifting center. Not so much because my opinions have changed but because I have no patience for the emotional and impractical nonsense of many of my age on the left. I can't just jump on a cause without reviewing the facts. Thats whats expected now. Complete compliance, complete rage. The left in the current era are just as authoritarian as many on the right.
To have an opposing idea, to dissent, to just ask a question is to be every -ism and to not be a true "scotsman". Nah that's not me.

Radical centrism & New/civic nationalism is where it's at.
