"negro" and "oriental" to be banned from federal law

Technically, everyone's ancestors are indigenous to Africa.

But, for the sake of discussion whites have occupied South Africa as long as blacks have been in North America.

We're talking centuries, like almost 400 years.

Elon Musk, Charlize Theron and Candice Swanpoel are of Afrikaners (Dutch) ancestry born in Africa, not Europe.

That makes them African.

What white person doesnt acknowledge their Irish, german, polish, jewish, etc Ethnicity? What Asian doesnt acknowledge their Korean,Indian,Thai, etc ethnicity?

White is a race not ethnicity.
Black is a race not ethnicity.
African is not a race, ethnic group, or nationality it is only used to simplify acknowledgement of someone being born in Continental Africa.

Has the education system failed us this bad?

Last time I checked we're all part of the HUMAN race b.

Except for reptilians. They're aliens.

"African American" was invented to replace black...(which failed) and black was invented to replace negro..

After awhile da English language is gonna look like a Mitchell & Ness team full of throwback patches, terms, and vernaculars.

Problem is social norms move faster than da more stationary roots of da English language.

Political correctness only exist in English, from what i noticed, cuz Spanish don't retire terms nearly as fast based on da social climate of its people...like when you hear spanish programing, there's a excerted effort to be more "accurate" about language than "sensitive".
There's nothing wrong with people becoming more respectful. If that's being called PC, than that's fine.

It's not necessarily restricted to English, just more common. We speak Dutch here and we've undergone several changes in terms for certain groups.

Our translation of negro used to be the commonly used term to describe black people. Over time it essentially became our version of the n-word so that caused a change. The acceptable term is now black, which ironically used to be considered offensive as well back when negro was common. Some people still use negro but more often than not there's racism behind it.

I remember this change occuring somewhere in my early childhood, I'd guess 10-15 years ago.

We've also had several changes in terms for immigrants because certain terms became the staple for racists.

Da problem is "being respectful" is a moving goalpost..

Hence negro >>>>colored>>>>black>>>>African american>>>black & african American tenuous coexistence we have now.

Like I said, this only exist in western American English ideology, coming from someone that speaks fluent Spanish...i can't vouch other languages.. any Asians care to chime in?

The words "Negro" and "Oriental" are finally going to be stripped from federal law soon.

The U.S. Senate approved H.R.4238 on Tuesday night, which stipulates that outdated and offensive terms such as "Negro" and "Oriental" that refer to marginalized ethnic and racial groups must be removed from federal law and replaced with terms like "Asian American" and "African American."

The bill was first introduced in December 2015 by Democratic New York Representative Grace Meng, and specifically targets the Department of Energy Organization Act and the Local Public Works Capital Development and Investment Act of 1976.

The former contains the phrase, "a Negro, Puerto Rican, American Indian, Eskimo, Oriental, or Aleut or is a Spanish speaking individual of Spanish descent." The latter has a line that reads, "Negroes, Spanish-speaking, Orientals, Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts." Both will be updated with "modernized" language, according to the text of the bill.

Meng released a statement on Tuesday explaining why she feels the bill is so important:

The word 'Oriental' is a derogatory and antiquated term and the passage of this legislation will soon force the United States government to finally stop using it. I thank my colleagues in the House and Senate for understanding that the time has come for our government to no longer refer to Asian Americans, or any ethnicity, in such an insulting manner. Repealing this term is long overdue. 'Oriental' no longer deserves a place in federal law, and very shortly it will finally be a thing of the past.

The bill is now on its way to U.S. President Barack Obama for approval.

 :smh: I remember that.

Last time I heard it was in an old movie referring to a group of Asians as Orientals and the other was a joke about "oriental fever".

I've heard older people say it, both black and white.

I always say something when they do, and how the word isn't used anymore. How the only time it's used is for rugs.

And that's usually where the issue is.

"Oriental" was used to describe objects.
