A 19-year-old woman in Arpajon, France threw herself in front of a commuter train and died yesterday while livestreaming on Periscope. Officials in France are now investigating the incident.

“This person allegedly sent an SMS to one of her close relations, several minutes before her death, to announce her intentions,” local prosecutor Eric Lallement said in a statement. “Furthermore, she allegedly made statements to Internet users, via the Periscope application, to explain her act.”

The New York Times reports:

People watching the video chimed in with remarks — including “We’re waiting,” “Always a pleasure to see you,” “Give us a hint” and “I think it’s fun” — that generally did not appear to take the woman’s distress seriously.

At one point in the excerpts, the screen goes dark and there is no noise. About five minutes later, the voice of someone who is evidently an emergency worker can be heard, saying, “I am under the train with the victim; I need to move the victim.” The train is visible in the seconds before the video cuts out.
Sadly, this is not the first time someone has broadcast their suicide to the world. In 2010, a 21-year-old Swede named Marcus Jannes hung himself in front of his webcam after taking a large dose of painkillers. More recently, a Chinese woman allegedly documented her own suicide on Instagram after going through a breakup.

Its just a damn shame :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh:

Why, seriously why do people think its ok to just say **** like that? Doesn't matter if its real or not, what decent person is compelled to be *** hole when it comes to suicide? Same thing happened to friend of my brother's. He was online considering killng himself and people were egging him on and he finally shot himself in the head.

This has nothing to do with generation, the internet just shows how petty and heartless alot of people are then we as a society realizes

Smh, this is depressing. People always go for shock-value and laughs to appear more cool. Hope those commenters are suffering from regret for a long time.

We don't need the usual gumps coming in here with their nonsense they just want attention as always.

Such a sad thing for her family. It sad when people suffer in silence like that ( assuming she did, when she could have been seeking help and just couldn't handle it all)

I agree. Social media too. Especially by famous people.

From what I remember in school ( which was 13 years ago so maybe its changed) the information was out there. Its hard to reach people who are in that stage of life.

People know their are outlets, the problem is alot don't think those will work. I'm more concerned about this culture of wanting people to jump so to speak.

My brother told me when his boy was online talking crazy some people reached out, but the overwhelming majority (strangers too :smh:) bombarded him with hate and jokes.

We got to do something about that

PS. I do agree with your post though

I don't social networking has anything to do with. It's more of the fact it provides a platform for the victim to be seen and heard.

Again that may be the case, but then what makes people see that cry for help and want to push them over the edge? Its sick

I think him mentioning famous folks campaigning for it in social media would go a long way. It wouldn't feel as taboo as it is now and it'll bring some normalcy to it.

The problem is for some ef'd up reason mental illness is a stigma or looked at as a weakness and some are even made fun of for it. If more people speak about it the less of a stigma it will have. As i get older i realize that everyone gets depressed sometimes but young kids don't realize that and they start to think they're "crazy" . They are embarrassed to ask for help or maybe they think it's a weakness to ask for help.

Bottom line is famous people on social media have a HUGE influence on kids so it wouldn't do any harm to promote getting help if needed.

Yeah, the Web desensitizes people because the amount of information that's processed each day.

People encounter thousands upon thousands of strangers' lives everyday.

Youtube, Vine, Instagram etc ...all providing visuals of amazing things like skydiving and ****.

...some people want to see something "real" that reminds them how fortunate they are to be alive.

Suicide provides that stimuli.

Yup, being socially awkward(being too nice, quietness, too loud, talkative, etc.) Gets instantly ridiculed in school. Couple that with hormones, being stuck with the same mini-society, and a still-developing brain can easily lead to anxiety.

Depression is a scary and debilitating disorder and should be taken with the utmost seriousness

This. The stigma around mental illness is exactly why society mental health is a major issue in today's society.

Many people also believe that depression is something that's entirely in your control and you should just "get over it".

I think such dismissal plays a large role in those who suffer from depression being embarassed to seek help, not to mention the stigma around seeking professional help in general like you said.
