Basketball/NBA gaining traction on "Americas sport"????

I've noticed quite an uptick with the popularity of NBA(basketball) for the past 10 years or so....

Not just on social media, but in corporate advertising, marketing, and in playgrounds everywhere...seems like more and more kids are getting into basketball these days (those ones actually engaged in athletics at least)

With all the bad press, safety risks/issues, long term-health and negative connotation the NFL has been receiving lately, are we seeing a shift?

I mean I think it's pretty unanimous that the MLB is in its darkest days (many purists say "dying")

It seems the NBA can do no wrong at this point, the game has rapidly expanded into a universal language and with positive press and very likeable/marketable superstars/role models leading the charge, I feel a shift.....

Anyone else feel this way?

Anyone have any data to back this up?

discuss...

I like to think so. My father's family (puerto rican) and my mother's side (Mexican) played baseball/futbol at some point, but with the exception to futbol, more of my family's new generation are picking up the rock than a bat. Never really cared for football. For reference, im 23. For sure football will eventually die first before baseball does though.

People will continue to watch football. Doesn't matter if they even see people dying on the field. You underestimate how fanatical people are about football. For some reason the sport is covered year round by espn.

I feel the NBA is putting out the best product from the 3.

Its fast paced, exciting, and not too long or stretched out.

NFL games can get really slowed down sometimes and be hard to watch when no one is scoring and its all defense.

I don't really see football expanding outside of america really either, I know the NFL has been trying hard to push football in europe...but everyone knows it wont catch.

Europe already has its sports, basketball being one of them.

It takes a lot of equipment and training as a youngster to pick up the game and get good at it.

For hoop, all you need is a ball and a local park really.....the game is pretty much the same on the playground and in the gym....

its not really like that for football, you have to learn organized football and there has to be institutions in place to teach it.

Kids are probably the MOST ATHLETIC they have ever been right now, and I think basketball favors pure athletes most of the 3.

It's not like most nba games are exciting. The top teams in the west are good to watch and a few from the east. The eastern playoffs have been buns. The western conference games have been a good watch except they air so late here on the east coast.

The thing that people underestimate about football and especially with the idea of it losing it's popularity... it owns an entire day of the week.

Once a week, they get THE ENTIRE DAY for their sport. It's become so ingrained as part of our popular culture.. you're not going to see that same hype and anticipation for the other major sports.. simply because they play games daily.

It's not surpassing the monolith known as the NFL anytime soon but I could see them supplanting baseball as the no.2 in the country over the next decade

No, there's too much flopping in the NBA and feels less like a team sport at times.

That you, Adam silver?

Never understood why people get wrapped up in which sport is 'most popular'. Like what you want and enjoy, don't watch what you don't

Hockey is the 'fourth' major sport....doesn't dimish my love for it at all

As far as ratings, forgive me if I'm mistaken but I believe last years finals was the best ratings since MJ played. Curry is as big a star as we have seen, and most of the NBA's best talent is under 30. Tough to compare television ratings to other sports due to timing but NBA is def #2 in my book.

I know I will continue to be laughed at, but Football will continue to take serious steps back due to the health aspect of things. I know my son isn't playing the sport.

Absolutely not.  Basketball is still a distant third place.
Wait who's 2nd?

You should be able to figure that out.
Honestly not even trying to be a smart ***. Bc No way is it baseball or soccer.

I honestly don't know anybody who watches baseball unless its the WS.

basketball is too predictable. also, way too many teams in theplayoffs. reg season doesnt mean much
going to a baseball gm>
it's a better experience and wont cost you an arm and a leg
