Basketball/NBA gaining traction on "Americas sport"????

Baseball is booming again with the talent infusion the last few years.

Nowhere near drowning.

Absolutely not.  Basketball is still a distant third place.
Wait who's 2nd?
You should be able to figure that out.
Honestly not even trying to be a smart ***. Bc No way is it baseball or soccer.

I honestly don't know anybody who watches baseball unless its the WS.
It's baseball.. just cause you don't know nobody doesnt mean a lot of people arent still watching it

Until there is an American born white superstar the NBA won't catch football or baseball.

Maybe once the demographics of this country change but right now nah.

i enjoy basketball, whether it be college, wnba, pros, etc. but the nba is basically ran by a couple teams every yr. i can pencil in lebron in the finals for a decade and maybe a couple in the west
in the mlb, anyone can win once they get in.

nfl is religion and will always be loved

The length of the Season is def a contributor as well. I refuse to pay to go see a game during the regular season because I know most likely the effort won't be there. Cut it down to 60 games or even 64 or so would make each game a lot more meaningful.

also, first rd should go back to best of 5. upsets more likely. rarely do we see competitive series with the higher seeds
dont need to see the w's or cavs spank the 8th seed four times in a series. too many breaks between gms and drags the playoffs. it's like a whole season in itself

If there's one thing we have lots of in America, it's old white dudes.

What do old white dudes love? Baseball.

Pretty easy to see why it's #2.

Ratings wise, I'm pretty sure bball is number 2.

Last year's finals blew last year's series out of the water (ratings wise)

**** is so wack and slow. Like straight still stuck on the 30's. Roger needs to make his way over to baseball to spice it up.

But simply comparing ratings on a national level doesn't define popularity. It's one variable to look at. MLB is structured differently as it has become a strong regional sport for each individual team

Patience and attentiveness. Two virtues that should be celebrated. Not every sport has to appeal to the ADD generation. Let things slowly unfold :pimp:

Popularity of a sport should be combination of a few things.  Baseball does not dominate the sports populous the way the NFL and the NBA do.  The NFL dominates sports headlines year round.  The NBA starts to dominate headlines after the Super Bowl and fully matures come playoff time.  The MLB may make headlines during the summer. The NFL has the ratings and NBA has the stars. MLB has the older crowd.  Sports fans watch the NFL basically no matter who is playing.  Sports fans will watch the NBA if its most popular stars are playing.  Sports fans like dmxfury said will watch MLB regionally but it isn't watched as much nationally.  The NFL makes it's quarterbacks the recognizable stars of the game.  The NBA makes it's best players the face of the league. The MLB does not promote it's stars as much.  Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are nationally known.  Kobe Bryant, Steph Curry and LeBron James are international icons.  Mike Trout, Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw are rarely promoted as a national product and a lot of times unrecognizable by the average sport fans who do not live in LA or DC.

It's all perspective and context on how you view the popularity of a sport.

you are absolutely right. however, the sports popularity on a national scale is a direct reflection of its signature event.

and if we are REALLY asking who's #2 then its college football by far then either pro baseball or basketball

it also matters who is actually playing too. the reason ratings were so high for the finals last year is due to the fact you had the warriors and the cavs playing vs. having the mets and the royals. if it ends up being the cubs vs. yankees, red sox etc etc that may change all of that

I think the NBA will become more popular than MLB in the near future, like 10-15 years into the future. The demographic changes favor the NBA in a big way, along with the truth that MLB fans are by and large older. Basketball also enjoys the advantage of being the more internationally favored sport of the two.

Football is a monster, and won't go down unless the health issues force a drastic change in youth participation and lowering of skilled athletes entering the league. Along with rule changes that fundamentally change the game. Outside of those two things, football will remain king.

Have always felt that the social media boom has created the perfect storm for Basketball's rise in popularity over the past 6 to 7 years. The NBA is tailor made for social media.

So for me, while Basketball is definitely 3rd, it's probably the hottest sport out of the big four over the past half decade or so and I feel like this will translate to the NBA becoming an even bigger and more popular entity as the years go by, eventually overtaking baseball in about 15 to 20 years.

When I hear stuff about baseball pitchers loosing their pitching velocity across the board.....the death of the big bats....thats pretty troubling.

I think generally speaking american's attention span is evolving as generations grow older and new ones are ushered in......

if you under 30....you are have become acclimated to certain "speeds" the speed of a web page to load, the speed of an email to send, the speed of a package arriving to your door step, the speed of traveling from LA to NY....we are sped up and became accustomed to things being really fast across the board....

i mean look at football games/players from 10 years ago and the difference in speed and athleticism now....its sped up drastically, same for the NBA....

Baseball on the other hand has a grueling pace and its pretty much alwasy been the same......i mean look at some of the "athletes" MLB pays hundreds of millions of dollars to play.

Baseball is not evolving with the times......make of that what you will.
