Given the history of the word I don't think us white folks should use it. We have plenty of synonyms at our disposal that aren't drenched in a long history of white supremacy.

My friends tell me all the time, this subject is beat to death.... only because like they said,

I know what you mean. I'm white and I use it only if it's in the song. But there are limits. For example: I'm not going to sing along with "Trinidad James - All Gold Everything"
I don't know how black people felt about the use of the n word in this song, but I noticed that white people sure seemed to love singing along to it. Maybe a little too much if you know what I mean. That song is a modern day minstrel show for white people.

I been called that word before but then someone who welcomed me into their home and pretended they were cool with me hit me with that.

I think racial slurs don't really affect us much because of white privilege and very different connotations between terms like cracker, cac, ... and the n-word. I often browse KTT where it's common for whites to be called cacs, ...
I don't think it's right to use any sort of racial slurs but it doesn't really offend me.
