How important is high school? ??

I think HS helped me hone critical thinking and taught me how to write coherently.

College was smooth sailing for me personally. The only rough part was juggling part-time jobs/internships with a full-time class schedule.

The most important class I took in HS was existentialism. Looked at myself and the rest of the world differently after that.

None of the others were particularly useful beyond the year I took them in except Finances.

That was a good one too because I learned about taxes and banks and everything else adults should know about money.

It's incredibly important that you graduate high school if you plan on doing something positive with your life and starting a career. If you intend to attend a good college, it's even more important that you do well in high school, especially on the SAT/ACT tests. It has a huge effect on what school you get accepted to, and which scholarships you'll qualify for. Having said all that, you'll want to focus even more when you get to college, because that's where it counts even more.

i took an ap social studies class in HS.

I remember it because it was so hard.

we had 4 big tests...... he gave us a choice, you cold write these ridiculously long papers (RIDICULOUS) , or you could participate in a public speaking competition on current events vs other schools.

the criteria for the paper was so ridiculous that almost everyone did the competition, a few did not because they were terrified of public speaking.

Basically you picked an index card at random and there would be a topic on relations between countries, or current events etc.....we practiced ALOT in class and i got pretty good.

my first one was something about nuclear missiles lol.

it was so crazy because i assumed we would be on stage in front of people, but they put us in a room with a college professor and my teacher and we had to give the speech in front of one dude while my teacher watched behind me.

i was really nervous.

my teacher could tell i was nervous and he pulled me aside and said " he knows you have never done this before.........just pretend like were back in class" (**** was like a movie lol)

i killed it .......

i was moving around, using my hands, using **** off dudes desk lol.

best class i ever had in my life.
Mr. Howell

i liked HS

Somewhere between a 2.8 -3.0 in HS

Got a track scholarship. Thank god.
Wouldn't have went if I didn't run, cause most the classes are boring and a waste. Just my opinion.
Feel bad for all these kids getting in debt for pointless classes and information they don't retain.
Just graduated college tho. No debt

Also never complain you are busy.

Practice two times a day. 15 hour class schedule. Working a job 20-30 hours a week. And not once did I tell anyone I was too busy or make excuses.

Best advice I can give is live life. Even when you get a normal job, do **** everyday. Don't just be a house bum cause your tired or say you gotta get up early the next day so you can't do xyz...have fun , you got one shot

Gradutated High School with 2.3.
Graduted Undergrad with 3.25
Graduated Grad School with a Doctorate with 2.8.

High School means squat.

For you it may not have mattered but that doesn't ring true for everyone.

If I got a 2.3 in HS there's a good chance I wouldn't be a doctor.

I truly didn't become highly self motivated until I made the final decision to apply to med school. I was fortunate to go to a HS that pushed and nurtured me in addition to having involved parents.

If I would've done poorly in HS and ended up going to a party school with bad habits I may have flunked out.

I thought most graduate programs kicked you out if your GPA slipped below 3.0?

Graduated HS with honors

About to graduate with a BS

but HS meant a lot to me socially. My best friends all come from HS.

the family members loudest at a HS graduations are typically there for someone who aint gonna do much after HS

Barely made it but I walked by the grace of God

I wish I would have taken school more seriously but my pops pushed me to the point where I mentally broke down and simple problems was like a fat man running a 26.5 marathon

I have no idea what you're trying to drive at here. Of course high school means different for everyone and serves different purposes for different people.

This whole discussion is supposed to be a collection of the community's experiences. I'm not downplaying a HS education, but if you come from a piss poor school district I have trouble adding any kind of value to that, that's my highscool experience.

And I said even coming from those high schools, it is important to do well or as well as you can. In fact the disparities in the quality of a high school education is evidence of the IMPORTANCE of high school. Hell there's evidence that shows achievement in higher education is correlated with as young as pre-school and grade school, but this may be a product of simply having more resources to succeed later in life.

And I may be wrong but aren't AP course standardized? In my honors classes I had to take SAT2 courses that were standardized, that meant I had to take the same exam as someone at a less rigorous school. Standardized exams are supposed to be the great equalizer. There are gifted students even at these horrible inner city schools.

Gotcha.

I know AP tests are standardized but the courses (at least at my school) were a joke unfortunately. I took an AP computer science course and the most rigorous thing we did was some excel work lol. I refused to take the actual nationwide test knowing I'd get a 1, but I still walked away with an 'A' on my transcript and that boosted gpa

What's the point of taking an AP course if you not gonna take the test. The test was required and was part of our grade.

Damn I didn't know they offered AP comp sci :wow:

Some of my AP classes required us to take the AP test, some didn't. And the ones that didn't were usually a joke. Not only was AP comp sci course a joke, but so was my AP bio course cause I remember my final for my AP bio class all i did was present on one of the thought foam DNA model kits from a craft store

Shame that some of the same AP teachers that were too lazy to teach me before, are doing the same to my little brother now.

habits carry over

do well in hs, do well in college, carries over to your job and family and so on

give everything your best

I took the AP CS exam wayyyyy back in 2001, so I know it's been around since at least then.

I don't think we were required to take the exams in my AP courses, but i think moat everyone did. Iirc we had to pay out of pocket. I don't know how they would have made us take it unless the school paid.
