Strange Jordan-copping story ... 2005 "Altitude" 13s

Last Monday morning I drove out to my local Champ's to line up for the XI Lows that just dropped, as they were giving out guaranteed tickets. When I showed up I was fourth in line. Two of the people ahead of me were a middle-aged woman (I'm middle-aged myself) and her twenty-ish son. It was still more than an hour until the store opened so we got to talking to pass the time. I was wondering why she was there with her son, since he was old enough to be there by himself, and she said she wasn't there for him, she likes to rock Js too and was going to cop a pair for herself. OK, my bad, LOL, No harm, no foul.

Anyway, after about 20 minutes of this, she suddenly turned to me and said "You know, I remember you from another Jordan line. It was a long time ago. We lined up in the middle of the night at Cortana Mall*. I remember you because you were first in a very long line and we were in it for about four hours, and then when the store finally opened, they told you they didn't have your size! I remember you raised hell about that, and ended up getting your shoes!".

I wasn't remembering this until she mentioned me being first in line and then being told they didn't have my shoe. I remembered that, LOL, and how it was resolved: I had called the store the day before the drop and specifically talked to the manager. He told me they had gotten one pair of size 13 and if I was first in line they were mine. So I got my *** out there at 3AM to be first in line, and after waiting 4 hours I wasn't about to be denied. When i got inside the store and the manager told me he'd made a mistake, I told him this was shady, that I wasn't some young teenager, that I knew people, and that if I didn't get my shoe I was calling his District Manager and raising hell with him about this store.

Turned out he had given the shoes to an employee of another shoe store from another mall. He took the shoes away from that dude, who was standing there holding the box, and gave them to me. Can still remember the look on that guy's face when the manager told him he had to give up the shoe, LOL. I paid and got out of there quick.

But I still couldn't remember the name of the shoes we were waiting for until the son chimed in. He said they were the Jordan 13 "Altitudes". Damn! That meant this incident took place more than 10 years ago. Turns out the day was February 26, 2005.

Amazed me that I was remembered by these folks almost 11 1/2 years later. We had a big laugh about that.

I suspect it also was because then and now, I was the only white dude in the line, LOL.

Anyway, those Altitudes are still going strong:

* An old mall that is across town from where we were lined up now for the XIs.

this is one shoe that started all the hype for jordans... I remember everyone going out of their way to get them but still came out shorthanded... people were camping everywhere and from the jordan 13 thread the release was pretty serious and some folks were salty they didnt get a pair... i didnt really like these jordans so i didnt participate in the hype in trying to cop them... but a year later my friend wanted to get rid of his DS pair for 30 bucks more and i jumped on it... i rocked them a good amount of times and eventually sold them

Yeah, my recollection is that they were limited. I think in my city only Foot Action got them, just one store out of seven or eight. I do like them, the neon green sets off the black nicely. Plus, I'm a sucker for just about any 13s. Just love that model.  IIRC, weren't they re-released sometimes around 2010? I was taking a break from the game then so not sure.

The 2010 pair wasnt as good as the 2005 pair since it had mesh versus leather on the upper. Both still a great colorway, but I like the 2005 more due to the leather.. been on the look out for another pair of them here lately..

Altitudes definitely started the extreme hype train for Jordan releases. They were the first "LS" release IIRC and aside from the UNDFTD 4's, this was the first limited in store release. Prior to that the only other Limited release was the online package for the Nubuck 12's. I remember these being advertised with a full page ad in Jordan Brand Magazine as a fall/winter 2004 release and people being hyped about them, but expecting them to release in numbers like all the other XIIIs. As 2005 rolled around and a definitive release date came out, people still expected them to be readily available. It wasn't until right before the release a lot of stores realized they weren't getting these at all. Prior to these, if you had a JB retro account, you got all the JB retros. Out of the 15-20 stores in my area that usually got retros, only two received the Altitudes. One with a single FSR the other with two. Lot's of folks showed up to their usual spot expecting to cop, only to find out they didn't receive them.

It was 10 years ago that I missed the opportunity to own these. They were sitting on a shelf at shiekh shoes. Not having a job or money to afford them. I had to walk away. Thinking to myself that I would never have another chance. Now, 10 years have passed and I have them in my collection. To know that I paid what I could have afforded back then is a blessing. Paid $20 for them at a thrift shop.. Never say never I guess..

Your'e 100% right. Well more like regenerated the hype much like the Concords in '11. People were going all out for these, and then the next year the Lightenings and Thunder 4's. I was still a GS sz around those times lol. As ugly as they were Dub Zeros matched the hype as the Altitudes.

I've still only ever seen these in person once other than the pair I have. I'm not sure if my city even got them back then. I was on vacation when I saw them.

My pair is starting to seperate some. Have had to reglue at flex points. I got mine from someone on the other sneaker forum.

Man, I still remember when I got mine. We got these in stores here in Canada a couple of weeks after they released in the states. Must have been March. I just walked into a foot locker a month after release and purchased them with ease. Things were a lot easier back then. Lining up for more than an hour was considered hard work.

Dug them up from the basement, receipt still inside. Never worn as I bought a pair like a year after this and wore those.
