An Army veteran who worked as an MTA train operator was tormented by a co-worker for not being “black enough” in her mannerisms — then fired for complaining about it, a new Manhattan federal lawsuit alleges.
Shauntay Watkins, who says she served in the Army for more than 10 years, was hired by the New York City Transit Authority in September 2015.
Shortly after, fellow train operator Tequisha Jenkins, who is also African-American, launched into “repeated and increasingly offensive discriminatory behavior” because of Watkins’ “failure to comply with racial stereotypes,” the lawsuit alleges.
Watkins, 35, claims Jenkins targeted her “solely due to her lighter black skin tone” — calling her a “fake” and “phony.”
Brooklyn train station singer gets lawsuit tossed out
Jenkins, of the Bronx, allegedly called Watkins a slur “for someone who appears black, but is white in their behaviors and mannerisms.” (pretty sure its a Oreo)
Jenkins also used a “valley girl accent” to mock Watkins and said her manner of speaking “was not ‘black’ enough,’” the lawsuit alleges.
The alleged bullying came to a crux on Feb. 21, 2016 when Jenkins — allegedly incensed that Watkins turned on train headlights when she was in the roadbed during a training exercise — threatened a beat down after their shift.
Watkins finally complained that evening, but she was let go last March in retaliation for speaking up, she claims.
Jenkins was also fired, according to the lawsuit.
The threats and harassment continued for weeks, Watkins claims.
“She received a number of threatening and harassing text messages, phone calls, and obscene pictures from unknown phone numbers. She was also made aware that her information was posted to Craigslist soliciting sex,” the suit states.
Reached by telephone, Jenkins strongly denied Watkins' allegations.
“It is ignorant, untrue and, as a black woman, I would never make any kind of comments like that against anyone," said Jenkins, 44. “It’s totally untrue.”
Neither the city not the Metropolitan Transportation Authority commented on the lawsuit.
