Whats Up NT General,

Long story coming but it's for a good reason.

Starts in spring 2006. My wife and I had been planning a wedding for about a year. This was the girl I was after all through college, but never got serious with her until we both graduated and realized we should be with each other. We got engaged in May of 05 and things were good. So she goes in for a routine physical and the doctor notices something off about her heartbeat. He sends her in for some testing and at the age of 24 she finds out she has a Patent Ductus Arteriosis, or a fancy name for a hole in her heart muscle between the chambers. This caused her to have an enlarged heart and basically the heart strength of someone in their 50s at just 24. The Docs told her that if she didn't have immediate surgery the hole in her heart would eventually form a clot which would travel to her brain causing a stroke and possibly her death. I was terrified I was about to lose the woman I wanted to raise a family with before I even got to marry her.

So she gets scheduled for a surgery with a doctor at MGH named Dr. Igor Palacios. Dude has a very very thick central american accent and notices me frantically walking around the room as they're about to put my future wife under for heart surgery. He comes up to me and says "you boy, you know the football playing man Tedy Bruschi?" I say, "Well yeah man we're in Boston and he plays for the Patriots, he won three super bowls he's a legend" he responds "Well If i fix him, i fix your wife" and he scurries off into surgery.

Lucky for me and my wife people in the past had funded research on heart surgery techniques that prevented her from needing her chest cut open to access her heart. The doctor only needed to make a small incision in her thigh about the length of a bottlecap, then ran a tube through her veins all the way to her heart with a camera and a titanium plug on the end of it that he placed into her heart to seal the hole. It's still there today.

So years go by and she recovers fully. She completes two masters degrees, gives me two beautiful kids, and becomes a professor at a university in New Hampshire. She takes up running as a hobby and gets pretty good at it. Runs a couple half marathons and gets the idea in her head that she wants to run the Boston Marathon. She hears about a group called Tedy's Team sponsored by Tedy Bruschi. She writes in and applies and gets accepted to run on his team to raise money to fight stroke and heart disease. So at their fundraising dinner here's me holding my wife's drink and this boston sports legend Tedy Bruschi's drink while they both pull out the cards from their wallets that let them get through the metal detectors in airports laughing about Dr. Palacios' signature on both cards. I'm sitting there with my jaw on the floor.

So she runs the marathon for Tedy's Team in 2014 and 2015, and decides she's done with it for now, but she doesn't want to lose her spot on the team. So i get the bright idea to volunteer to run and raise money for the American Heart Association this year in her place. I've committed to raising 10,500 dollars in her honor, and i'll be running the Falmouth Road Race in August, the Las Vegas Rocknroll Half Marathon in November, and the 2017 Boston Marathon in April. The least I could do is try to raise some money for the American Heart Association after research they funded came up with the surgery that saved my wife and gave me a chance to have a family.

So one of the ways I've come up with to raise money is to raffle off a part of my sneaker collection, if you're a size 12-13 there's some good pairs in here and I'm only selling 200 tickets for 12 prizes so you've got a 1 in 16 chance of winning something. I ran this by Meth and he approved me making a thread today. The links to both the Raffle and my fundraising pages are below. Thank you for anything you can contribute.

Also if anyone remembers this is the same woman who made me the Ray Allen 13s cake that got posted on a million sneaker blogs a few years ago. She's a keeper. Help me do something good for her.

Thanks

Subbed. Will donate for a fellow New Englander. I've been sliced open more than once so I'm glad your wife was able to get the non-invasive procedure and is well.

WOW 15 out of 200 tickets already sold. Thank you guys. Will draw winners as soon as all 200 sell

Lucky for me it's not a sad story at all. She's actually a spinning instructor at the local gym for a second part time job now too. She's totally healthy now. Basically the main reason I'm trying to do something to give back. So someone else can have a good end to their story like mine.

Good to hear things are going well and you're doing a nice thing with the raffle. I was worried as I kept reading that the story would turn sad again.

Same here! Op had me thinking he was about to say she got bad again after she starting running
That's awesome she went from having a hole in her heart to running marathons :pimp:
