My family and I will be vacationing to the island of Oahu in early August. We have yet to choose a destination on where to stay as we're unfamiliar with the areas and what they offer.

I hear the North shore is really nice, as well as the South but it's very busy around there.

I don't know exactly what my family all want out of this trip, but I'd like to do a lot of water activities, snorkel, swim, surf, etc. Also a hike or two would be nice!

Of course a luau is in order but what other suggestions do you guys have, both touristy and things locals enjoy as well?

Some info I've gathered from previous threads on NT include
-Diamond Head Hike
-Koko Head Hike (Harder?)
-Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven)
-Shark Cages
-Paradise Cove (Luau?)
-Hanauma Bay (Snorkeling?)
-Skydiving?
-Zip Lining?
-Kayaking?
-Manoa Falls
-Kualoa Ranch (ATV Riding?)
-Lanikai, Kailua, Ala Moana, Cromwell (Beaches?)

Food
-Giovanni's Shrimp Truck
-Macky's
-Kahuku Superette (Authentic food?)
-Helena's (Authentic food?)
-Ono's
-Highway Inn
-Marukame
-Kakaako Kitchen
-Leonard's
-Honolulu Burger Co.
-Boots n Kimo's
-Matsumoto's Shaved ice or Waiola or Shimazu
-Rainbow Drive-In
-Teddy's Burger

Any info you guys can provide as I've seen your names come up in previous Hawaii threads?

The only time I've gone was in 09 so it's been a minute, but Oahu is pretty small and you can reach the north shore from the Waikiki area in little time while visiting spots along the way.

General guideline for traveling especially with family is to check out Airbnb. You guys will probably want a kitchen, and suites in Waikiki won't be cheap. I personally recommend a car so make sure your AirBnB has free parking. August is coming up quick so I wouldn't be surprised if available rooms are drying up. I would book now, like right now.

I was checking out some spots on VRBO, will continue to look. Need to decide where to stay though.

My parents will be with me, they're around 60 years old, but still very mobile.

I don't know if they'll be hiking with us (unlikely), but I'd like to take that into consideration when choosing a place to stay.

By the readings Waikiki sounds quite hectic. We will be renting a car for sure btw (or Jeep?)

checkin in..

will be in town aug 26-30th

everything you've posted is pretty good. can't really go wrong with any of those choices. only one i'd scratch off is kakaako kitchen. i don't like that place.

hanauma bay is an easy and safe spot to snorkel at where you'll see plenty of fish.

shark cage is ok. not scary at all. if you even think you might get seasick, take dramamine to be safe.

skydiving was fun. did it twice.

you gotta get up super early for stairway to heaven and avoid the security.

if you head to the west side and you're caucasian, only go as far as koolina resort/paradise cove.

Any alternatives you'd suggest over kakaako kitchen as well as Hanauma Bay?

Where did you skydive if you don't mind me asking?

How early is early enough for stairway to heaven? Is it a long hike or is there security looming around not allowing people to go on the trail?

And my skin melanin is rather brown shaded.

the food choices you have are pretty good man. right near waikiki there are some good spots like diamond head market and grill as well as pioneer saloon. alternative to boots and kimo might be koko head cafe except the lines are just as long at both spots.

not sure how early stairway is now. you have to get there before security comes on cause they block the entrance. if your parents are 60, it's not recommended unless they're really fit.

i think i went to skydive hawaii. no complaints.

Noted.

Anyone have opinions on a hotel vs airbnb vs VRBO?

I'd imagine I'm not going to be spending too much time indoors as I'd like to explore.

Sounds like you've got pretty much everything down. Jet skiing I would recommend for sure. Try Killer Tacos, Roy's (if you're a baller), and Bubbies.

Any place in particular to jet ski? And hm, Mexican food in Hawaii, will have to see what it's like.

Stay away from North Side (Haleiwa) unless "u like scrap"

Scrap? Are we talking about nothing to see, or dealing with locals resulting in fisticuffs?

That's probably the thread I picked your name out of!

Skip Roy's, that's a chain you can get on the mainland. Ain't eem baller status though. You can get a 3 course prix-fixe for like $45 if I remember correctly

my friends and their family are going out July 4th week. i wish i could make it with them but I have to save for the Philippines in November.

I've been to North Shore plenty times, if you mind your own business people won't mess with you. But that's just my experience.

Killer Tacos is worth it. I've generally found food to better there because of the freshness, trust me.

Forgot where I went jet-skiing but I do remember kayaking to Mokes Island.

Guess I gotta make a stop to Killer Taco! Living in California, gotta see how it compares.

Also, we decided to just stay in the South on account of my folks. I wont let them deter me from exploring a bit though.

don't eat mexican food here. there are some ok places but it won't compare. same with italian food. don't bother.

on the other hand, like nazlew said, eat poke. the poke bowls here are much better than the nonsense i see mainland dudes posting up online.

Not Caucasian (obviously lol), just curious about this. Care to elaborate?

From what my homie who lives in Hawaii says, that area is pretty rough and is generally very anti-haole.

Shark's Cove for snorkeling, tide pools and jumping off rocks.

Laniakea Beach for turtles. They roll very deep at this beach lol.

Load up on spam musubis etc at Musubi Iyasume before driving to the other side of the island.

Maunawili Falls for a hike through the rainforest that ends at a waterfall where you can swim. The best kind of hike.

Dammit I'm craving Helena's and Leonards right now :smh:
