How Do You Determine Intent?

We've all been in situations where we've been told by people that they didn't mean to do whatever they did and we're left to wonder whether they're just naive/unaware or if it was actually intentional. Sometimes there's a fine line and it can be difficult to tell.

Is there any way to determine people's true intent? If so, how?

To me the most important aspect is knowing the person's character. Aside from that its a crap shoot when you consider all the different variables that come into play(intoxicated, under stress etc).

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt the first time it happens, but if you are a habitual line stepper I know your true intentions.

Most people don't operate from a place of true altruism. Most people are self serving. Do with that what you must when assessing actions.

what happened op.
Nothing specific, just a general question

I do feel like I hear the "I didn't mean to" line a lot though so I was curious how others approach these types of situations
