...this is what an Entrepreneurship Business Professor said to me when I gave him the business plan I wrote for UndergroundHipHop.com back in 1997.

Funny thing is, UGHH is still around and here I am on a thriving forum that has a lot of roots tied to hip hop, there are still hundreds of hip hop blogs and websites, and technically, Hip Hop is still considered very influential on a world-wide scale.

I want to do an exploratory article on the insights of people who love hip hop and why THEY think Hip Hop will NOT die like disco.

It's been almost 20 years since that professor made that gut-wrenching remark to me, but I still think about what he said.  And now in hindsight, I think, "Thank God he was wrong" - but WHY was he wrong? Why does Hip Hop persevere, where so many other music genres quickly fade into oblivion (like Disco?)

If you love hip hop (especially if you have been a long term hip hop head), please respond to this post as to why you think hip hop is resilient and still stands the test of time even after 30+ years - I want to gather as much info as I can to pull into my article! Thanks for your input...

Some thoughts

It was obviously a comment by someone who didn't understand hip hop/rap.
Before rap, music wasn't based around lyrics. There was no debate if Stevie Wonder was a better writer than Marvin. They weren't trained to listening to rap lyrics, so they looked at it as if it were Future or Desiigner. You were just mumbling and not saying nothing.
Disco was never the music of the youth. It wasn't fourteen and sixteen year olds who were listening to disco. It was 25...30 year olds.
That's why disco wasn't a genre, it was a subgenre. Rock was fueled by young people. Jazz was fueled by young people. Who looked at the music as a way of life. Genres have peaks and valleys, metamorphosis, but they don't die out. You still had songs in the 80's up until today that are disco like.
Rap has continuously been the voice of young people and has morphed in to different forms to represent them. That's why the 80's, 90's, 2000's have all been distinctly different.
Disco was one style, rap has many styles. Every region, state, city can have their own form of hip hop. You can listen to whatever rapper fits you or your mood. If you're in Idaho, you can do your form of rap that represents your friends and city. Young Thug can be hip hop. Nas can be hip hop. Nipsey can be hip hop. Royce can be hip hop. Nelly can be hip hop.
I think of disco as a form of club music, like EDM, house, go go, club music is the bigger genre.

its the voice of the people

even today, although it's heavily commercialized, hip hop is still the voice of the people.. maybe just not most of the hip hop on the radio

Mhmm.

I was not the Founder of UndergroundHipHop.com, that was my husband - but I have been actively involved on operations/strategy side over the years. I wrote the business plan, helped set up all internal processes, built out his initial communications structure and yes, even helped pack orders when the biz was still being run out of a 3 bedroom apartment lol.

When it became a self-sustaining biz, I stepped away to focus on my own passions, but I am always on the sidelines taking a keen interest in the overall industry along with the underlying cultural factors that keep Hip Hop (especially the niched indie portion) alive.
